my mom gave me solids around that time. She says I ate them wonderfully, even though I did not have any teeth until I was 15 months old. I would just chew with my gums...even meat!!

And you are the reason why we go to PNPs! I've gotten so many "why"s when I specifically ask for a Nurse Practitioner whenever I make an appointment somewhere. It seems like so many doctors will only go by the book and NPs actually take the time to look at each child as an individual and evaluate accordingly.

Oops! I forgot the actually answer the question at hand.

We were doing some baby food, some soft table food (avacados, small pieces of pasta, softer cooked veggies, etc) and our PNP told us at his 9 month checkup to just go ahead with table food for each meal. I do still give him some baby food if we are eating a particularly spicy meal.

Re: Weird dr app't... when are you supposed to start "real food"?

My way of thinking is (beyond the nutritional aspects) baby food in jars is expensive. I work with an underserved rural population. They don't always have the money to buy those things. It's my job to protect my babies nutrition by helping the parents know what to feed and when. I always tell them table foods are fine, just don't add salt, sugar, butter, or oil/lard/bacon grease. Their limited funds will go a lot farther if they spend 79cents on some bananas and mash them to feed baby 7-8times than to spend 79cents on 1jar of food. Also, so many of my patients have large gardens, what could be better than fresh, homegrown veggies and fruits?
So, OP, go for it. I can tell you there's nothing in the AAP guidelines that say you have to support Gerber.

Luckily my husband is a Doc...and we have several ped's friends. I was informed when my baby was 6 months and not eating baby food...to go ahead and give him finley diced regular food. We gave him everything including fruits and veggies. Your Doc is crazy! He may be very old school.

Re: Weird dr app't... when are you supposed to start "real food"?

That doctor is a moron, seriously. My son never cared for mashed foods, either, except for the fruits. He finally started gaining weight when I just started giving him what I eat (and I think I eat a pretty balanced diet, btw, I know enough about nutrition)... "baby food" is by no means a necessity!
