My Relactation Journal

Today, I've decided that I'm going to try to relactate. It's been amost 4 mos since my supply died. I tried to get it back with pumping before, but now I'm going to try everything . I'm tired of her spitting up the formula and we've tried every kind it seems. She never spit up my milk. Anyway I have a script for Reglan and an old PIS. Any support or suggestions would be appreciated in my journey. Wish me luck and pray that this works!

Re: My Relactation Journal

I suggest you consider domperidone. I would not be comfortable taking Reglan for an extended period of time. With the side effect of depression, it could undermine your efforts. It is already easy to get down when you are struggling with milk supply.

I have not relactated, but I have struggled with chronic low milk supply. Here are some things that helped me:
-Pump, pump, pump (whenever, where ever, for what ever bit of time you can squeeze in)
-Here is a post where I gave a bunch of pumping tip: http://www.diaperswappers.com/forum/...22&postcount=2
-Consider renting a hospital grade pump at least for the first few weeks. It can make a huge difference for some mamas.
-Drink plenty of water
-Eat steel cut oatmeal
-Drink Caffix, Pero or Roma (barley based coffee substitutes) I drank at least 2 cups a day double strength
-Goat's rue tincture
-domperidone
-get enough protein
-supplement at the breast using an sns

Do a lot of research online related to adoptive nursing and low milk supply. Here are a few sites:
http://www.lowmilksupply.org
http://asklenore.info/breastfeeding/abindex.html
http://www.fourfriends.com/abrw/
http://www.mobimotherhood.org/MM/default.aspx

Also, try to make it to LLL meetings in your area. The support can give you a real boost when you are working so hard. My LLL leader nursed 2 adopted babies and we have a mom in our group now who is working on inducing lactation for an adopted baby, so it is not that terribly uncommon. You may find someone else who is doing the same thing.

Best of luck. Keep us posted on your progress.

Good for you!!! I'm trying to induce (never breasfeed before) so you have huge ! I must admit there are moments where I feel like just giving up (I've only had drops for over a week ), but it's the best for our babies!

Re: My Relactation Journal

Me too. I've been taking this
http://www.motherlove.com/product_more_milk_special.php
and pumping at least 6 times a day for about 5-10 min. I have ordered domperidone, I haven't received it yet. I started on 5-28 and I've already been getting small little dropletts. I haven't breastfeed in about 2 years. My dd is almost 3. We are adopting a baby. Keep up the good work.

Also, I plan on getting a sns or lact-aid.

Thanks so much ladies! Where are you getting the domperidone? I thought you couldn't get it in the US? (pm me!) I'm picking up my script for Reglan today and seeing how that works with my pump (about every 2 hours), If I don't have much luck with that, I'll do the motherlove product and a hospital grade pump. Thanks so much for the encouragement. I quit last time after my third bout of mastitis and cracked bleeding nips were too much, also I had low supply (but i think i didn't drink enough). So there's my plan for today! Good luck to all of you that are on the same journey!

Re: My Relactation Journal

Let her nurse for comfort as well, like instead of pacis, and any skin-to-skin is great. Take a bath with her, let her rest on your belly. The skin to skin ALWAYS makes mine want a nip. Plus, even if not nursing, it stimulates prolactin.

Best of luck!

Oh, and Dr. Sear's has a chapter on relactation/inducing lactation in his Breastfeeding book, IIRC.

Re: My Relactation Journal

I tried to relactate, I wasnt successful at it, but thats due to living at my inlaws in a stressful enviroment...LOL

When I met with the lactation nurse they gave me a hospital grade pump and was advised to pump every 2 hours even through the night and use a SNS to stimulate production as well...

If you get the SNS dont use the flipping tape they give you with the package go out and get some thats stronger...

Good luck and I really hope you do it, I think its great that you are going to try.

Re: My Relactation Journal

I'd love to find domperidone as well. I'm also trying to relactate. Anyone have a good pumping and med schedule that they could let me use? I need all the help I can get.
