Why are my diapers getting holes?

I am getting frustrated. I have a ton of diapers with holes and shot elastic. I figured it was because I use all my diapers every other day therefore I am washing and drying every other day. BUT I just bought some fitteds from a friend that are in excellent condition! I have had them about 3 weeks and one of them already has two holes in the outer fabric. These are LC's so they are made good. It is like as soon as I get a hold of diapers they fall apart. I am doing everything normal I would think. They are only in the pail for 1-2 days I do a cold rinse and wash on hot with an extra rinse. And I try to dry on med if I have time or hot if I don't.
Anyone know what I am doing??

Two things come to mind what are yours made of? And did your friend have a much bigger stash and maybe go 3-4 days between washes?

Also what is your water like? I have read that hard water can cause wear faster. (or is it soft, sorry head cold)

Re: Why are my diapers getting holes?

how old are your boys? are the holes on the inside or outside of the diapers? could it be that they are rubbing the diapers or scooting around wearing on the diapers? are the holes in the same area on each diaper?

with twins it may just be a fact of life that because you have to rotate the stash so much it may just wear faster

I think its my washer that does it to mine. DH says his moms washer seems to wear things out faster too, its the same.

thats why I want one of those new washers with the teeny tiny agitator at the bottom instead of right through the machine.

Re: Why are my diapers getting holes?

HOLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have holes BECAUSE...the lint buildup on the inside of your diapers. The lint collects and forms little balls, and eventually they become bigger balls as they join together...they rub on the fabric and, viola, you have holes.

More than likely the fabric either wasn't prewashed before making the dipe to reduce lint, or the internal soaker is not a serged one.

The little balls tend to migrate to the wings, corners, etc. You can feel around your diaper and eventually after much use find them building up there first.

Also diapers that are TnT...will get holes. Especially around the leg elastic. Turned diapers are fine, you just don't want that topstitching around the leg elastic.

So...how much you wash has nothing to do with it. The holes come from how the diapers are made. Over time, I'm sure holes will eventually happen, but that shouldn't happen for a really long time.

To avoid them, ask how the dipes are made before you buy them. Only get fitteds with internal soakers that are serged, and fabrics that have been prewashed. On hemp fleece, cotton fleece, sherpa, etc...they need to be pre-washed a few times...not just once...before making the dipe as they shed for quite a few washings.

I found this hard to swallow when a friend first told me these things...and I found it to be so true. In fact, I stopped making dipes for myself until I bought a serger. I don't want balls and holes in my dipes!
