EBFing....mucous in stool...kinda green too? HELP

THe last few BM's Katie's had have had a little bit of mucous in them, and are starting to become kinda greenish looking. She usually has the mustard yellow, seedy poo. Is this something I should worry about?? I'm going to call the pedi tomorrow, but it would be nice to see if anyone else has had this happen and everything been ok. I've read that it can be allergies? I have been cutting back on my dairy recently because she is so gassy and I thought maybe it was because of dairy, and her fussiness has improved since I've cut back, so i don't think the mucous could be because of the dairy since i've cut back, and before I cut back her stools looked normal. She's been eating well, and been gaining good... She's 8 weeks and is 10 lbs....was 6lb 6 oz at birth. And I usually feed her on one breast until she is done, so she should be getting enough hindmilk. I just don't know...should I be worried about the green color and mucous??

That's a pretty typical time for allergies to start appearing, but seeing as it has only been for a short period of time, i would wait and see. Often times green mucousy poop like that will be the only sign of a virus in an EBF child.

Cutting back on dairy doesn't mean very much to many kids. To the gut, it is often about sensitization, so if she's dairy sensitive, the odds are high that you'd have to eliminate all trace. Dairy and then dairy/soy are the most common, but I would not jump to that yet.

I think it sounds less like allergies and more like an over supply

Consistently green stools in the breastfed baby can indicate:

an imbalance of foremilk/hindmilk, often resulting in frothy green stools.
a sensitivity to something in the mother's diet, such as cow's milk products.
a sign that baby has an illness. Babies with an intestinal virus or even a simple cold will sometimes have green, mucusy stools. Teething can also bring about green stools due to increased saliva (can also cause tummy upset)
a lot of green vegetables or something with green food coloring in mom's diet.
If baby has started solids, that could also account for the change in color (this is normal with the change in diet).

Ok, I would check out that link and comtinue feeding her on just one breat at each feeding, if she burps and wnats more go back to the same breast, then at the next fed let her nurse off the other breast the whole feed.

I ahd this problem with Catherine and it took 3.5 months to work out our over supply issues.

Good luck.

Since she said she's already feeding on one side, and it is mucousy rather than frothy and suddenly here, I'll maintain it doesn't sound like HM/FM, but this is the standard time for allergies to appear and I would investigate that IF it doesn't go away in a few days.

Sounds like oversupply to me momma and I can relate, I've dealt with it before. What I did was to block feed the baby until my milk wasn't crazy. You just feed the baby on the same side for a set amount of hours, like say 2-3? Once the baby takes more hindmilk the poops will get yellow again.

Re: EBFing....mucous in stool...kinda green too? HELP

Please don't block feed (multiple times on each side) unless you have major symptoms of oversupply you have not mentioned -- lots of choking, etc.

Green poop alone does NOT mean oversupply, and block feeding when it is not indicated is often extremely damaging to supply.
