Overfeeding?

Could I be overfeeding DS? And if so how do I stop? My 9 wk old DS eats for 45 min. to and hour at a feeding 9 times a day. He is having reflux issues and I am wondering if it is caused by eating too much. Is this possible in a BF baby? If I try to cut short his feedings he freaks out.

Re: Overfeeding?

Honestly I always just fed on demand when breastfeeding. I dont think overfeeding will cause reflux (though my DS would spit up after he ate if it was too much). The only thing I can think of is he needs to be burped more often maybe? Try stopping every 10 min or so and burping him, that may help the reflux? At 9 weeks, to me, it's really important to feed them when they are hungry and let them eat until they are full.

Does he take any medication for his reflux? My DD took Zantac 3 times a day. This really helped. He will outgrow it eventually so you don't have to use it forever. My DD just turned 1 and no longer needs it now. I don't think you would be feeding him too much. They know how much they need. I always feed on demand.

Re: Overfeeding?

You can not overfeed a breastfed baby! Don't worry. Has your pediatrician diagnosed reflux? If so, medication will probably help. Have you ever thought of oversupply, or overactive letdown? These things often go hand in hand and it is often mistaken for reflux. But don't worry about overfeeding! Good luck!

Re: Overfeeding?

Yea I agree w/ you are not overfeeding. I was always told that when baby suck suck sucks, it's getting your body to produce more milk that it needs. We just do on demand as well to their little hearts content!

Re: Overfeeding?

i know mine would nurse for like 30 mins i would do 15 on each side. and after i would sit her up and she would like projectile vomit all over. it was because she wasn't getting the hide milk...
so i nursed on one side for a while till my milk readjusted. it was much better As soon as a did that.no spitting up.

Re: Overfeeding?

The symptoms of oversupply do sound like our issue, but he is not spitting the milk up right away...he is spitting up sour, curdy milk a while after he eats.

If I had an oversupply wouldn't milk shoot out when he pulled off? Wouldn't I be leaking?

Not necessarily, I never did, she just had green poop and lots of gas.

Re: Overfeeding?

I fed on demand and thought I was overfeeding because she was showing reflux signs. It turned out I had an overproduction and super fast flow. I'd talk with your ped or LC about this being a possibility
