Re: Rebecca or Rebekah?

I have to agree with a pp, as someone with an *unusual* name and siblings with fairly normal names, as a kid it peeved me that they got personalized stuff and I didn't. Not a deal breaker, but for a 7 yo at Disney, it's a bit frustrating!
I love the look of Rebekah, but if it was mine, I would probably spell it Rebecca.

Re: Rebecca or Rebekah?

Thanks for all your input, ladies! I appreciate having people that aren't invested in our baby (ie. the grandparents!) giving us their opinion.

I think we've settled on Rebecca. As a lot of you mentioned, it just seems like she'll have an easier time with that spelling. Of course, if she hates it, she can always change it as a teenager!

Now, we don't even know if this baby IS a girl. Don't even get me started on our trouble settling on a boy's name.

Thanks again for all your opinions!

Re: Rebecca or Rebekah?

You made a good choice going with Rebecca. Like you said, she will have an easier time, since people are more likely to spell it correctly. Also...

There is a common misconception that “Rebekah” is the original or only Biblical spelling, but that is not correct. The spelling “Rebecca” is used in the Bible too (see Romans 9:10 KJV). Not only is "Rebecca” used in the KJV Bible, it is actually the older Biblical spelling. The ancient Latin Vulgate (compiled in the 4th Century A.D.) was the version of the Bible that was used for centuries. The Latin Vulgate uses the spelling “Rebecca” exclusively. Centuries later, when the Bible was translated into English in the year 1611, the spelling was changed to “Rebekah” for the Old Testament, but the spelling “Rebecca” was retained in the New Testament (see Romans 9:10). So the older Biblical spelling is “Rebecca,” but both spellings are in the original English Bible. If you go to LatinVulgate.com and look up a verse such as Geneiss 49:31, you will see the name spelled “Rebecca” in the Latin text alongside an English translation of the verse.

The original name was in the Hebrew language, which uses an entirely different alphabet. There are no English letters in the Hebrew language.

Glad you've decided. I like -kah, but you used the z instead of s spelling of Elizabeth (and Elisabeth is the Biblical spelling) so I would have said -cca too.

Re: Rebecca or Rebekah?

My mom decided on cca for me because she wanted me to be able to buy tacky souvenirs with my name on it. All my siblings have Biblical names as well.
