PFs and covers. Seriously.. get like a dozen and 2 or 3 PUL covers.

You can get a dozen premium PFs for $24. A snappi, which technically, you don't even need, for a little over $2, and Mom's Milk Boutique has Thirsties PUL covers for a little less than $10 each, or you could find them cheaper on FSOT probably. You could have a whole stash for around $50. I, personally, would rather have 2 dozen PFs, but 1 would get you by if you are that strapped.

A stash of enough OS dipes for two kids would be pretty pricey, I think.

On the sizes, my son can wear size 4 sposies and is between mediums and larges. He can go either way, but has enough growing room left in mediums that, if its a good price, I'll buy them. (When I'm buying new I ONLY buy large or OS though.)
If you're looking to have 2 in cloth, I'd definitely consider having a good amount of your stash be OS diapers. They won't work well for a newborn (too much bulk) but, once the cord falls off and the baby is 10-12lbs, they should work fine. Being tight on cash, for a newborn I'd just do about 18infant prefolds and 6 prorap newborn covers. You'd be washing daily, but only until little one grows into the one sizes, and it'd be a minimal investment to get you through until other things fit. Then the prefolds can be used as dipes, inserts, doublers, etc.

Thanks for everyone's help!! I'm thinking prefolds and covers are the cheapest - that's what I'm working on. I get so overwhelmed though b/c trying to figure out the yellow, red, brown, unbleached chinese indian thing is making my head spin!!!!!! ARGH! There should be a prefold for dummies thread, lol.

eta: I forgot to say DS is in size 4/5's. He can wear 5's, but he just barely fits in 4's with no leaks so I've been 4's b/c there's more to a box than the larger sizes.

As Courtney mentioned...I have a prefold/covers package right now that is on sale 15% off. It gives you some prefolds/covers/snappis. We mostly just have XS and L left in the covers as no matter how well I stock, ppl love sales. lol.
