Need re-lactation help and advice!!

My SIL is adopting a baby girl and needs some help. Baby is due in less than a month. She has nursed a baby and he's been weaned for 2 years. She will get this baby girl from the hospital and really wants to breastfeed her.

Any advice, help, etc. would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm going to send her your advice.

Re: Need re-lactation help and advice!!

Has she thought about fenugreek, Domperidone, etc? Fenugreek is easier to get your hands on, but the others you would need an Rx or order from an off shore pharmacy. I used Domperidone when re-lactating for my son, it did something but not a WHOLE lot for me.
Drink plenty of water, eat oatmeal, pump pump pump, drink some more water, pump some more, LOL. I would try searching this forum for that lactation cookie recipe, I'll see if I can find it.
ETA: here

Has she looked into SNS or Lact-Aid?

Tell me more. I don't think so. She said she'd only heard of fenugreek and pumping. But she needs to get going if it's going to work.

The SNS and Lact-aid are meant to use for when the baby comes to her and then you can use it to suckle them at the breast while giving them formula - therefore helping your supply since baby is so much better at getting that milk out of there. Let me get the links...

The Domperidone works far better than Fenugreek, but she can give that a try first. I would also get some Mother's Milk Tea or something.

Lact-Aid: http://www.lact-aid.com/ (I used this one, I think)
OK, having a hard time finding the link for the SNS. Wait, here it is: http://www.medelabreastfeedingus.com...ing-system-sns
I was incredibly frustrated with using my Lact-Aid, but I'm not a patient person in general.

Has she been in contact with an LC or a physician yet? They should be able to guide her through this and provide the prescriptions she might need to get things flowing. I hope she is successful!

She hasn't. I wish she would. I think if she doesn't get going on something it's not going to happen. She thinks pumping occasionally will work.

Re: Need re-lactation help and advice!!

Here is a very comprehensive website for adoptive nursing: Ask Lenore

I ditto the suggestion to get an ABS (at the breast supplementer), domperidone (not Reglan), speak to an LC (who has experience with re-lactation or LLL leader and I wanted to add try Goat's Rue. Goat's rue helps build mammary tissue, I found it to be much more helpful than fenugreek for me. Motherlove makes a plain Goat's Rue tincture.

Also, there have been a bunch of good threads on here recently about re-lactating, pumping and low milk supply.

I also wanted to add that support is important and a positive mindset. If she goes into it believing that she needs to achieve a full-supply for it to be successful or worthwhile, I think she will be disappointed. There is so much benefit to every drop of breastmilk and the act of nursing at the breast (even if it is mainly supplementing with donated milk or formula.) She should do some research and set reasonable goals for herself.
