Question Nutrition needs for a NB from breastmilk ?

Is it possible to go from BFing a 18mos old to nursing a newborn *via adoption* and meet that NB baby's nutrition needs ?

That is a great question. Hav eyou talked to your PED to see what they say?

Maybe your LActaion consultant or LLL LEader?

I'll be interested to hear what the pedi says.

I know of one person IRL who has done this. Her third toddler was still nursing, and she adopted a newborn. She had to pump for him b/c he was in the hospital for a while, and the NICU nurses were SO excited that he was going to be getting breastmilk.

I'd look for a LLL leader, or maybe email one. Most of the info I got from peds & our local lactation consultant was a joke.

the milk is different right?. but women do regularly nurse one older child throughout a pregnancy then nurse their own newborns, so I would assume the answer would be yes.

Re: Nutrition needs for a NB from breastmilk ?

I think the real question is if pregnancy is necessary to induce your body to produce milk appropriate for a newborn. I've never come across this before, and I'm sure many LCs have not either. You might start here:

I'm totally not sure, thats a good question, but when dd was 8 months old I started donating milk to a newborn and she was exclusively bf'd for 3 weeks...then the little piggy was eating too much for me to keep up, so she was half and half for a while. But she did great...her mom never said anything about her lacking nutrition. I hope you find some answers!

What about moms who donate to a milk bank - do they distribute based on the age of the child getting the milk vs. the age of the mother's children who donated it? Did that make sense? It's late...
