Ants in Sandbox Help!!!!

I opened Caroline's sandbox yesterday to discover ants crawling all over!!!! The sandbox is about a month old and has a lid (it's one of the little tikes plastic ones.) I keep the lid on it unless she's playing in it. Does anyone have any ways to get rid of the ants and keep them away that won't harm DD or my strange dog who likes to eat sand?
TIA!

Ants aren't harmful. we've got them in ds's sandbox. It comes with the territory when you play outside. You're not going to be able to keep the ants out.

Peppermint might help. They don't like it.

I've heard that if you take dirt/sand from another ant pile then they will go away. It has to do with their being very territorial, or so it was explained to me.

cornmeal - completely non toxic. It takes about a week to fully work, but it works well. They take it back to the nest, they all eat it.. but they can't digest it and they die. HTH

Ground up sea salt, i line my doorways and windows with it. Maybe make a line around the sandbox. Just be careful not to put it on plants or soil you use for planting as it sterilizes it.
