WWYD?? Twin sleep struggles...

Hey Mamas

Let me start by saying that I'm very lucky to have two beautiful babies who are very GOOD babies. They are laid in their crib at a set time each night, fall asleep on their own, and for the most part sleep rather well at night....

Over the past week we've been having some issues though... For awhile now, Sadie will 'startle' usually within an hour or so of falling asleep. Some nights she will do this a couple times... she starts crying loudly, and some nights its almost a scream - but she's not fully awake. If we pick her up to comfort her, she wakes up and thinks its playtime. Our peditrician suggested to gently pat her and Shhhh her - which worked very well for awhile. Well, it doesn't work anymore. She keeps crying/screaming and we HAVE to pick her up - we don't want her to wake her brother who is sleeping in his crib on the other side of the room. But some nights it does wake him... and then we're up for another hour or so trying to get them both back to sleep. Sometimes this happens a few times each night!!

I don't know what to do... its getting worse! Keep in mind that I said she's asleep when this happens... the peditrician said we could try just letting her cry (ack!!) - which I hate to do - but I'm worried that she will continue to depend on us picking her up. And now she's pulling her brother in, and the same thing happens with him - he thinks its playtime if we pick him up. Ugh!

Do you have any suggestions?? Last night it was after 11 until they were both back asleep in their cribs!!

TIA!

are you against co sleeping? thats what i would do. she might be scared or something. my 2 1/2 year old did this too and i just picked him and and let him sleep with me. he did it for about 2 months when he was 1, and then he went back to sleeping in his bed all night...

Does she have a lovey (blanket or soft animal) that she likes? When DS was that age he would "wake up" (still sleeping like you mentioned) because he had lost his paci.

My twin DDs suck their thumbs, but they also each got attached to a stuffed animal that is also a blankie. We have a couple of "spares" for each of them and when one is washed I will then sleep with it for a couple of nights so it has my 'scent' and then I'll trade out.

co-sleeping might also be a solution, or you could try putting a t-shirt you've worn in her crib so that she senses you are close even if you really aren't.

Is she possibly teething? We had a lot of late night crying at that stage with DD1 and I'd give her a teething tablet and rock her for awhile. Of course DD2 would wake up and watch us from her crib, but I'd just keep telling her it was night night time and to go back to sleep - which she would do eventually.

Re: WWYD?? Twin sleep struggles...

Hi! I'm a twin mama. I have two 6 1/2 month old girls. For a while, she was doing something like what you describe. We found that the best thing to do was to put a comfy blanket around her, pick her up without talking to her, and go rock for a few minutes. Enough time to calm down and relax, then put her right back in bed. No talking, playing, etc...

However, she only did this for a couple of nights, and although she hasn't had a tooth pop through yet, I'm thinking her little gums might have been hurting. How long has your LO been doing this?

Can you put the pack n play up in your room and separate them when she wakes, then sneak her back in when she's back to sleep?
