Re: If I can ask..How much do/will you give your child for allowance?

The LO is 6. He gives her 2.00 a week. But she has to earn the amount by doing additional chores. Not just her daily ones. The amount can also be reduced due to behaviour.

We buy her clothes. I won't allow her to dictate that she has to have something. This will be harder as she gets older though but that is way we are the parental unit. The other day she expressed an interest in black. He and I share similar cultural values so black on a child to us is a big no no. We will allow her to pick from an assortment of clothes before we buy. But if she has grown lately and all of a sudden she has high-water pants well... What can you do?

We will be giving allowances, just haven't figured out what to do. My parents made me save all my money and not use a dime of it. While it was good for the saving aspect, I did NOT learn the value of money. My dh, however, was able to earn money and decide how to spend it. He always acted as a 'bank' for his older siblings and would lend them money and charge interest (lol!). He's a lot better with $ than I am.

Regarding clothing, I think as they get older (and develop preference)...we'll buy the basics and then anything extra will have to be with their allowance money - objects OR clothing. Not a separate clothing allowance.

My 2 get about $1 to $2 a week depending on what they do (they are 5 and 6 btw). They get a quarter each time they feed the dogs/cat. A quarter if they clean there room when I ask them to, or fifty cents if they do it without me asking. So usually about $8 a month for each of them, it's not much but there young, they dont need that much lol.

we will probably start "giving" allowance at around 12yrs; BUT they won't see the money until they turn 18. we are going to set-up an account/cd something that accrues interest.

This made me lol! I used to do this too. I remember being 8 years old and lending my brother $80 to help buy his first dirt bike. Two weeks later he paid me back around $100.. probably closer to $90. We still laugh over my high interest!
