I pay 3.99 plus tax at GNC for my Dr. Bonner's. I only use half a bar a batch though, so it doesn't bother me that much, plus I love it sooo....

Re: Green & Thrifty...Making Your Own Detergent!

ok so...I took them out of the dryer...after a cold rinse, hot wash with 2 1/2 tablespoons of the diaper detergent...then another rinse...the diapers themselves are clean, all but 4 or 5 of the inserts are STINK FREE...BUT it made them all feel kind strange. They're whiter but they're not really soft maybe not use so much? rinse more? I like that I don't have to wash them seperately(dipes and inserts)...but I wish they were softer feeling. And I haven't tried them on dd yet to make sure that there are no reactions.

Any suggestions on how to get all the stink out of the inserts? How to make them feel softer?

What kind of inserts do you have?

And how hard/soft is your water?

Lisa...what kind of detergent is that leftover from?

I switched from regular Tide and I did the same test when I started...but my water was SO much darker! DH actually thought the homemade stuff had done something wrong because the water was dark gray!

They're microfiber inserts...MOE, Rainforest babies, cottonbabies, random microfiber towels.

And we have city water cause we live in the city lol ....other than that I don't know how hard/soft the water is lol normally hard water leaves that orange color and we don't have that at all.

Re: Green & Thrifty...Making Your Own Detergent!

Hmmm...could you clarify about how they're "not soft"?

Microfiber should feel kind of "prickly"....that's why it works so well, because there are thousands of little loops to catch the liquid! Some people won't use MF for that reason...it feels weird to them.

I know they feel kinda strange to begin with...lol but they feel different than they normally do...
hmm how to describe it.

well after feeling the inserts again...now they don't really feel much different than before...

but the fleece on the pockets isn't soft
and what about the stink still in some of the diapers? maybe need to be washed again? they all have a VERY faint smell of ammonia but 4 or 5 of them are strong smelling still in a few spots

Re: Green & Thrifty...Making Your Own Detergent!

Fleece generally pills up and gets less soft with use, even the pill-free blankets my kids have aren't as soft as they were when I made them. Your fleece shouldn't be really soft (that would be build up) but it shouldn't be stiff either.

Also, MF is notorious for stinkies...you could use more detergent (I use up to 4 tbls in a load because of MF)!

ok thanks! next time I'll try more detergent in the load! I'm hoping to give the homemade detergent a fair shot cause I bought it I might as well!

you haven't had any problems with the elastic sounds crunchy have you? or bunching weird after washing with the detergent?
