Re: Green & Thrifty...Making Your Own Detergent!

Re: Green & Thrifty...Making Your Own Detergent!

For the mama who was concerned about the safety of washing soda. Washing soda is actually the main ingredient in almost all detergents. You don't want to eat it or put it directly on your skin, that's why the machine rinses. So it's totally safe, and detergents actually work better in higher alkaline environments. Country Save has a pH of 10, just for reference.

Another soap that works very well and smells great is the Imse Vimse Wash Away Stain Soap. This will even get out grass stains and other dirty messes on my hubby's work clothes, and our bedding has never been so clean!

An easy way to grate the soap is to use a cheese grater. Just rinse it when you're done. It's only soap and it won't hurt anything.

I really like this detergent....I've been sniffing diapers like a crazy person since I washed with it, and there's really no smellies. My diaper pail doesn't even stink like ammonia yet (and it normally would by now.)

It seems like that diaperjungle.com or pinstripesandpolkadots.com mentions not using soap because of teh buildup.....though that might be an issue more for pockets maybe?

Can't wait to try this! I scored washing soda at a discount store nearby for $1.35 a box!

I've got a load in my FLer right now. I used 1 tbsp. I can always adjust if needed.

I had a mama ask me if using the oxi-clean in every load is safe for pockets. It is isn't it?
