Re: Green & Thrifty...Making Your Own Detergent!

I make my own soap, and it's wonderful. I've never turned back. I find that it not only dissolves totally in my washer and is very gentle, but it also seems to make my clothing collect less pet hair... I guess because it doesn't have the additives! Love it! I haven't bought the store bought stuff in almost a year now!

Anyone ever use Octagon soap for this? I know it is a laundry soap and it is sold by Kosher stores so I can use it. It is sold for $0.50 at an Amish store near here.

Are you having trouble locating Oxy-Clean, is that what you mean? I don't know where you are but I'm in Canada as well and here anyway it's very easily available just about everywhere.

Karen.
I can find the Oxy-clean, the powder hydrogen peroxide is what I can't find
Since you are also in Canada (I'm in Sask), what is the 'recipe' you use?

Thanks

Re: Green & Thrifty...Making Your Own Detergent!

Oxy clean is powder peroxide, or at least part peroxide--it's washing soda (sodium carbonate) and powder peroxide (sodium percarbonate). No need to add it seperately.

Yup, peroxide is formed in a reaction with the water...

Ok now this makes sense! I'm not sure why it took me a while to catch on, I'll blame lack of sleep!

Thank you mamas for clearing this up for me, I'll be making my own as soon as I run out of Tide!
