I think I had an epiphany!

Okay so it has not been good around here lately.
DS is teething like a mad man and biting me. today I gave him some of the walgreens Ibprophren and he is acting so nutty it is like he is a completley diffrent kid.

Something in the walgreens brand is making him more unhappy then if I just left him alone.

anyone else notice that your DC acts very weird when you give them a certain med?

All 3 of mine FLIP OUT when I give them Benadryl. The second time that happened, I tossed all the Benadryl in the house.

But only my oldest (well, I don't know if my other two have had any Benadryl ) It is supposed to make kids sleepy and it knocks me out cold but for him, it's like injecting him with straight sugar and caffeine mixed together. Needless to say, we don't use it anymore.

Have you thought about red dye 40? I know that makes some kids loopy and it's in most ibuprofins.

Re: I think I had an epiphany!

With my kids, benadryl makes my first real sleepy...with the correct dosage, it nearly knocks him out cold in a short period of time...same medicine, different child - WIRES him like he's on speed!!

My first doesn't seem to have any weird reactions to any meds...it seems they've all worked like they should....but my second isn't that way at all. Most meds don't work (like tylenol) or work the opposite (like benadryl). I found one tylenol that works for ds2 and we ran out and I can't find it again..SO frustrating!

I wouldn't recommend this for one reason. We actually saved a neighbors life by having bennadryl in the house. One of the neighbor kids had eaten something with a nut product in it completely by accident that they were allergic. The poor kid was almost suffocating from the immediate swelling. The Mom did call 911, but they said to get her bennadryll as fast as she could while the ambulance was on the way. There is a good chance that she wouldn't have made it otherwise.

**I know that they have epi pens, but that is only when you are aware of the allergy. They had no idea she was allergic. These severe allergic reactions can come from other foods, bee stings, etc.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic from the original post, but I felt I should mention it. To answer the original question, yes, my kids have had different side effects from some meds. Luckily none too extreme. Even though the brands may list the same active ingredients, sometimes a different brand will help more.

it could be the sugar or the red dye # 40 in it.

I was thinking the exact same thing - -many kids (and adults) react negatively to the red dye. You can buy it without.
