Ugh! Isn't that considered reckless driving? I'm not sure but I think she was in another state too. She was driving back from VA to NC where we live after spending the weekend with a friend, got the ticket and called my EX to tell him (guessing that I would be quite upset no doubt) and to have him call me to tell me. Ugh. Now we are going to have to hire a lawyer to get out of it, I think. I don't even know what will happen if she is out of state. And the insurance! OUCH! I guess I'll find out when she gets home...

19 over? thats not considered reckless driving.

Atleast not in CALi.

If its under 25mph over you can go to traffic school for the first offence and your insurnace WILL NOT GO UP, but the ticket will be most expensive. 25+ you do not get the option to go to traffic school and are stuck with the point on your record. So reckless driving MUST be over 30 ATLEAST.

As for her being 17 and this happening I dunno what the rules are for minors!

Ok well here I just found out it's over 80 or +15 with mandatory 30 day suspension or your license. Of course I don't know what they will do since she is a minor and she may have been in VA...

She should be home by 4:00

She may loose the licence temporarily. I got a high ticket at 19 yo and the judge actually lowered my speed on the ticket a few mph so I wouldn't loose license (but I just got lucky getting him!) but my fine was really high! He definately gave me a long lecture about responsible driving and considering others lives and my own...

I thought reckless was 20 miles over so maybe the cop was being nice?

Showing up to court alone might help her. I got a ticket in VA at 17 and the fact I drove over an hour with my mom just to attend traffic court, the judge threw it out. Plus I wasn't going that much over the speed limit.

I do know in VA the fines can be high, though. SS mama

In Virginia, unless it's changed in the last 3 years, reckless driving is 80+ on the interstate or 20+ over limit. And fines are high. My husband got a ticket for reckless driving on the interstate (clocked at 82, I think) and him just showing up in court got his fine reduced. They dropped a few miles so he didn't have the reckless driving charge. Often just showing up in court really helps and if it doesn't get it thrown out, does often at least get the fines and whatnot reduced.

here it's 20 over the speed limit. sounds like the cop was doing her a favor.

just curious - why do you need to hire a lawyer?

Does the ticket say the violation is for going 19 over? I know here in Michigan they note the actual speed you were clocked at but they can write it up as a ticket for lower mph. Ive gotten alot of tickets back in HS and I've never had a cop write it up for the actual violation but rather less if that makes any kind of sense.
