My car is older, 2000 Explorer, I do not think that it has a LATCH system.

So my question is do I have to have one? What is a tether?

Stupid q's I'm sure but I just realized that I might have installed his carseat incorrectly.

The tether anchor is usually up behind the seat or on the floor behind the seat. It is what the strap on the top of the seat/back top connects to.

it should have a tether.. also depending on the weight of your child the long route or short route system for installation is recommended.. i bought this car seat and my dd needs the long route installation and my seat belts aren't long enough!!

Ditto the others... I actually prefer seatbelt installs on our Regents. And top tethering is always recommend, but required on the Regent once the child hits 50 pounds (you can reference your manual).

According to the LATCH Manual, a 2000 Explorer (4 door model) has (2) Tether Anchors at each outboard position on the second row bench seat: "Squared cargo tie-down rings behind rear seat." You can use either tether anchor for a seat installed in the center position.

Note: The vehicle manual does not identify the closed-loop cargo tie-down rings as tether anchors, but they are to be used as such.
