Re: Anyone refuse pap smears/vaginal exams during pregnancy?

ABSOLUTELY! Your wording made me sad- you don't have to "ask" them not to touch you, or for fewer exams, mama! It's YOUR body! If you don't want something you are ALWAYS in complete control. Keep in mind, whether you have insurance or not, you HIRE the doctor. He is YOUR EMPLOYEE! YOU ARE THE BOSS!!! There is ZERO need for them to examine your vagina right now, unless something is wrong. YOU would know if something was abnormal. Any vag exams have the potential to introduce bacteria, including GBS. Just simply keep your pants on and say "No, thank you." Bring a friend if you need an extra voice. Here's wishes for a happy, healthy pregnancy!

They're totally non-necessary for a normal pregnancy. My MWs don't do any unless the patient requests.

I didn't have any exams Or a PAP this time.

My OB says if you have normal paps and and monogamous, then one every 2 years is fine for PAPs.

The current protocol advised by ACOG is if you are over 30 and have had no abnormal paps in three consecutive years, you can go to every two years. I refused my pap with dd, I had just had one where I work prior to becoming pregnant (I had my IUD removed at my annual exam). I transferred the records over. I also refused to be "checked" later in the pregnancy. The midwives were great about it, the docs thought I was weird (the practice I went to has both).

I never had a single VE during my last pregnancy. Not even during labor. It's YOUR body, mama.

I had my routine pap at the beginning of my pregnancy but no vag exams until labor - and then only one. You can say no to anything you don't want.

I LOVE your avie.

OP, thanks for posting this. I *know* I have a right to refuse, but it's still intimidating, especially around here. Everyone just does whatever a doc says, no questions asked. I plan on refusing the exam at my first OB appointment next week, and I'm really wanting to refuse most of the blood work (blood type, rubella immunity, STI's). Hopefully I won't be searching for a new doc/midwife set-up b/c that'll mean having a midwife from out of town and having this baby at home!

Re: Anyone refuse pap smears/vaginal exams during pregnancy?

My midwives were also very happy to do no vaginal checks. I had one check the day before my due date, and I actually had to talk the midwife into it! (She said, "I firmly believe that babies will be born without any vaginal exams.") Even during labor I only had one check to make sure I was ready to push.

I recommend midwifery care so highly if good midwives are available to you. It's a completely different model than with the OB/gyn - it's designed to empower you and keep you in control of what's happening with your body.
