Unhappy Got my AFP results in...

I know that most decide not to get this test or the quad screen but I would rather know what to expect than have no clue! Well, I had my AFP test done Monday and received my results today...I have a high marker for down syndrome. Odds are 1:91. I am freaking out...I just need some hugs. I am waiting for a referal so that I can make an appointment with the perinatologist. I am just trying to remain calm.

Re: Got my AFP results in...

I do not know much about this, I just get the tests done and think nothing of it. BUT I have heard that these tests can be all over the place and are not always accurate, I think they will make you go have an amnio to get more accurate results but that is not safe. Honestly i think they just push it because some people will choose to not keep the baby if it has a disability. Good luck with everything.

I'm sure everything is fine mama! I purposely chose to avoid this test because of the high rate in which they scare the crap out of people and end up being nothing!

i have to take that test when i get back from vacation... they warned me of high false positives... 1:91 does NOT mean anythings wrong at all!

Re: Got my AFP results in...

Try not to worry, those tests are SOOOOO incredibly inaccurate (which is why I never do them) I have had 2 friends have them done, both said the child had Down Syndrome and then of course the children have turned out just fine! There are tons more cases than just that but those are the 2 I know, my mom can recount dozens from her clients (she's a midwife) where the same situation has occured. Those tests are wrong more times than they are right.

Please do not stress mama. That test has a VERY high false positive rate. It also has a false neg rate just as high. My OB says that the test is useless and doesn't care for her patients to get it. Hang in there, most likely your little bean is just fine mama
