Anyone having an Amnio?

Had my 1st appt today with the OB (we alternate between PA and OB). Since I'll be 36, I fall into a new catagory--a higher risk for trisomy problems. I've never considered the triple check before because of the high rate of false positives, but now we have the amnio decision. Apparently at 36, the risk of Down's syndrome (and other problems) increase exponentially. Down's risk is 1 in 287 and other chromosomal issues is 1/149. Now, I wouldn't consider termination if there is something wrong, but is there any benefit of knowing if something is wrong? I know this is a big ethical issue and I don't want to start that, but have any of you had an amnio? Are any of you over 35? Did it ease your mind or just stress you out? BTW, the risk of problems from the amnio is also about 1/250. I feel so old today

Re: Anyone having an Amnio?

I am not over 35 yet, but since i have already had a child who has down syndrome I have been offered to have an amino. I have yet to agree to it, the risk of miscarriage to me is just to high to agree to it. It wouldn't change my mind either way, so not sure I want to even risk it.

I wouldn't do it. Not worth the risk IMO.

Re: Anyone having an Amnio?

Personally I do not think the risk of mc is worth the risk. just my

Having said that, I did have an amnio done at 36 weeks with my first to check his lungs. All I can say is OUCH! And as a first time mom (then) OUCH again to the big contractions that followed.

I figured if I went into labor, he was big enough to be OK.
He was born a week later.

I am considering one because of the results of my AFP test.

The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow, For children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow. So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep. I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

Re: Anyone having an Amnio?

In my mind there is no benefit that would come to knowing. You will find out eventually, so there is no need to have the extra risk involved w/ the amnio. FYI, my brother has Downs Syndrome and my mom didnt find out until the birth. No one suspected anything in fact until he was born. It was a big adjustment for the family only b/c it was such a shock. Everything turned out fine in the end, and I wouldnt change him for the world.
