Relactation? Is it possible??

For you to understand where I am, I am going to have to tell you where we have been.......

Camille was born August 8, 2006..She was a born breastfeeder (like her brother) We had a normal breastfeeding relationship until she was 3 weeks old when her heel-prick test came back abnormal...I was told to immediently stop breastfeeding because if she had galactosemia the breastmilk would cause brain damage. Over the course of the next two months she had three more heel-prick tests that came back abnormal. During this time I was pumping religiously and my baby was spitting up formula...Finally, the doctor ordered a Gault test (measures liver enzyme functions). At the time this test was given I devoled a very severe breast infection..The doctor recommended I be "dried up" and told me Camille defiantly had the galoctosemia and what was the point anymore? So I allowed myself to be dried up. Two weeks later we get the test results, She does NOT have galactosemia in ANY form. At that time, my doctor informed me that the heel-prick test has a high false-positive rate (wish he would have told me that in the first place) After about a month of FF, I started trying to relactate...
My little girl is seven months and does not want to nurse at all on an empty breast. I have been pumping with my PIS but with no luck...I feel like if something was coming out, she would want to nurse...

So here is my questions:

Is it realistic to keep trying to relactate? Is there anything I can take to help me?
Should I just chaulk it up to a lost cause and plan to do it with baby#3?

I just feel so sad that we were denied that special realationship and that my daughter has to eat inferior food...

Re: Relactation? Is it possible??

I am in the process of relactating after a 6 month absence. My reasons are health as my 18 month old has had a cold all winter and I'm tired of it. I began manual pumping about 3 weeks ago and rented a Symphony pump on Monday. I also started taking fenugreek and blessed thistle and began taking domperidone on Monday. I am seeing fantastic results. I really believe within a few weeks that I will be producing enough milk to give her a boost.

I would suggest if really want to try it, do some research. Here are some sites:

http://www.mobimotherhood.org/MM/article-lms.aspx#flow
http://www.mamadearest.ca/en/info/ne...ssing-milk.htm (lots of information)

There are different protocols for relactating. I would suggest looking into. It is an undertaking, but to me, it will be so very much worth it. We've been away from the breast about the same time. All bodies respond differently. PM me if you would like to talk more.

Good luck!

Re: Relactation? Is it possible??

Mama, I am also trying to relactate. I am on more milk plus. It contains blessed thissle and fenugreek. I am awaiting the arrival of my domperidone. It should come the first part of next week. I started a week ago today. I started getting a few drops and a woman at LLL told me to "power pump" that is basically a lot of pumping in a short amount of time. Anyways, I stressed my breasts out and they stopped producing anything. I was told to go back to 8 times a day and 12 glasses of water a day. I am doing that and hope and pray that my milk will be coming back in when I get my new medicine. I am (like Susan) doing this for the health of my children. If you can believe this, i am actually pumping right now while I am typing to you and holding my now 11 month old boy. I have not lactated in 10 months. My milk dried up after a month of having my son in the NICU for a month. Good luck to you and if you need to talk about anything, just PM me and I would be happy to call you on the phone to talk too.
Kim

For all of you relactating, if you haven't found this site yet it has links and resources that helped me a lot. It's about adoptive bfing, but it helped when I was relactating: http://fourfriends.com/abrw/

Re: Relactation? Is it possible??

you can absolutely do it, it you're dedicated and can afford the time.

some rec- yes, go on protocols to get the milk back. then get a SNS- supplemental nursing system so she drinks her current formula from your BREAST, not a bottle. She'll learn that that's where the food is from now on, but she'll also be getting her nutrition, so she'll want to. and have a few nurse-ins. once you start the meds and herbs just spend a few days nursing as much as possible and doing very little else. Beer, water, oatmeal, fenugreek, and domperidone, etc. You can do it! If it's important to you, you can get it back.
big big hugs because that must have been a terrible experience to have to go through. (((hugs)))

Thanks so much...
I just ordered the SNS, what a neat idea. I am just determined to get my milk back...
I am pumping alot now and waiting for the domperidone and more milk plus to come in the mail..
Is tingling and a sudden relaxing feeling a good sign when pumping even though nothing is coming out (yet)??

The tingling is usually like a let down feeling, so yup sounds good to me.

http://www.kellymom.com/
Kelly mom site is great, also cal your local LLL.
http://www.lalecheleague.org/
You can take Domperidone(motillium) as well as Fenugreek 3 tabs 3xs a day, and blessed thistle 3 tabs 3xs a day. Keep putting babe to the breast, perhaps with a SNS (LLL or a LC can help with the SNS) (SNS supplemental nursing system)
Don't give up, and don't be so hard on yourself. Take care if you need more info i can give you more.
