Skipping right sentences?

DS (16 months) has several words, all basic, some sign language and we swear that he has been repeating full sentences to us like "Hi, How are you?" and a few others. He's no making up his own sentences or anything crazy but he's not repeating words only phrases, we think.


Anyone's child do this or are we just making our won sense out of his babbling?

My parents are in the process of adopting a little boy who is currently in the foster care system (he is right around that age, give or take a few months). He didn't talk much at all (lots of talk - no "real" sounding stuff, LOL - he can talk for hours). Then one day a few months back I swear he yelled "You Get Back Here" to the cat he was chasing - in completely plain english and right in the middle of all the rest of his babble. It was the funniest thing I have ever heard, we were all laughing so hard and he was staring at us with this what is so funny I have always talked look!

It's not uncommon for children to learn routinized expressions as one unit. So if your son hears, "Hi, how are you?" all the time, he's probably learned it all together (think of it as learning it like it's one really long word). Lots of kids do that kind of thing with phrases like "What's that?"...I'm drawing a blank thinking of others, but you probably get the idea.

Yeah, Bram's first (and only) words were "thank you". No "mama". No "dada". Just "thank you". LOL
