Getting professional massages...questions...
Is it ok?
I plan to go tomorrow to get a deep tissue massage (man I need it!!). Is it ok to do while pregnant? I'll be in my second trimester tomorrow! The dayspa I'm going to said that deep tissue massage is fine to do while pregnant, but they wouldn't give me a massage until I was in my second trimester. What are your thoughts? Advertisement

Re: Getting professional massages...questions...
I had a pregnancy massage when I was in my 2nd trimester last time around and it was heaven! I plan on doing it again this time around too. It really helps loosen up tensed areas, and not to mention pampering yourself! I do remember there are areas theyre supposed to avoid (feet maybe?) b/c it might bring on contractions. I didnt avoid anything in my massage, in fact, hubby had to massage my feet all throughout the pregnancy. You'll have to look it up to be sure then.
But seriously, after my massage it was literally like I was floating on Cloud 9. My body felt SO relaxed and I felt like I was walking around in a dream, not reality. It was weird! But when the feeling went away I was disappointed! ![]() ![]()

Re: Getting professional massages...questions...
The day spa that I went to when I was pregnant with LM didn't do first trimester massages. I asked why not about it one day, and the receptionist told me that the first trimester is a volatile time for moms (we all know that) and not that a massage could trigger a mc, but it is kindof a liability issue. That is why some spas don't do massages in the first trimester.

I have a gift certificate from a Spa that I was planning on using for their "Expectant Mother's Massage." In order to receive it, though, they say you must bring a doctor's note, and I have wondered why that is.

Just curious, why are the ankles a "no no?"

Re: Getting professional massages...questions...
It is completely safe HOWEVER, there ARE spot of your feet that should not be touched so early in your pregnancy. A simple foot massage wont throw you into labor or anything but there are reflexology points where labor can be stimulated.
FWIW, I had a massage last week and it SUCKED! The lady kept digging into me. How many times do I have to say "ouch","that's tender" or "can you please do it lighter" ??? I left there feeling like I just got beat up. |

Re: Getting professional massages...questions...
I got massages with my DD2's pregnancy starting at the end of my third trimester. It was LOVELY.
I've gotten three already with this pregnancy at 6 weeks, 13 weeks and 16 weeks. As long as the person who does it is experienced in massage (as in avoiding the trigger points on your ankles and shoulders and others that I can't remember) you should be fine. I don't know if deep tissue is allowed for pregnancy here. I just get the preggo massage and they focus on the areas giving me pain. |

Re: Getting professional massages...questions...
The ankles and the wrists are a "no no" bc that's where certain pressure points are that relax the uterus!
