If your kitchen is open to the LOs...

How do you keep them off the kitchen table? Right now Riley is locked into the living room but I hate that he only has one room to play in all day, every day. I mean, after all, this IS his house too! Thing is though, when I open up the gate and let him have access into the kitchen he LOVES to pull out the chairs and climb onto the table. Sometimes he is going for something that has caught his eye and sometimes he just likes to sit up there.

my dd did the same thing. I would let her in the kitchen, if she got on the table i would take her down and explain to her that it wasn't allowed. If she did it again i would take her out of the kitchen. I just did this every time and she eventually caught on that she wasn't allowed on the table. You could also just pull the chairs away from the table.

as repetitive as it is i would just keep trying to redirect them and let them know it's not allowed...as pp said. I didn't have a table climber but did hav ea couch/furniture climber in the living room

Sometimes we put a gate up between the living room and the kitchen, other times we take the chairs away from the table and put them in another room. DD figured out how to move the chairs back to the table, so that didn't work to long, just putting them away from the table.

I got fed up of putting everything back in the cupboards so we put a swinging gate across the kitchen.
My friend used to tie all the chair legs together under the table with a bungy cord to stop her boys from climbing on the table.

I used to keep all the dining room chairs turned on their side.

Re: If your kitchen is open to the LOs...

I think once or twice my DS got on the table but we would just tell him "no" when he got up and he never did it anymore. What we had a problem with is DS (who taught his older sister) how to move the kitchen chairs all around and get dangerous things off of the counter (like the knives) or just make a mess with something up higher and a couple times I found him up on the counter. So I had to move the chairs into the living room and stack them against the wall so they couldn't be pulled down or moved.

I like this idea! I don't have a climber yet. He walks everywhere, but he hasn't figured out how to climb. I think I will try this. Even if I just get a few bunjies and go around the entire table on the outside. That way they could all be held together at the backs so he wouldn't get tangled if he decided to crawl under. I can sooo totally see this working!
