We heard the baby's heartbeat!

I'm so excited! Last night after hubby got home we dug out our doppler and he used it and we heard our baby's heartbeat for the first time! It was 165-167!!! It was so special it being just the two of us in the room! We did call the kids in and let them all hear also! All together we heard it for about 30 seconds! I don't want to use it much at all but we are 1 1/2 to 2 hours from our midwife so I wanted one just in case I ever felt the need to check on baby and not have to run to the midwife so far away to do so!

Anyway - I was just so excited I had to share!

whats UC and also does it harm the baby if you use the doppler frequently?

Re: We heard the baby's heartbeat!

UC is unassisted childbirth.

Does it hurt the baby if you use it often?

That is a debate as best I know it. It is like ultrasound which they tell you they don't know of any side effects but yet they also caution you against using them just because. They strongly advise limiting them.

So I prefer to err on the side of caution and not get but one or two ultrasounds (I like to have one around 16 to 20 weeks for gender and then another later that is the 3D/4D type). I've always let the midwife use the doppler at each monthly visit to hear the heartbeat. I don't think that once a month for a minute each time is a big deal but I personally don't want to use it every single day for 5 minutes each time. Make sense?

I don't think that even if you used it daily for only a few seconds - long enough to hear heartbeat and get a reading that it would probably do anything at all - I mean I had multiple scans when I was expecting our 4th and she is just fine.

However, I have had several midwives tell me that it does affect baby because (and again this is just what I was told I do not know the legitimacy of this) but that on little boys that you can often see on an ultrasound that it will cause a little err*ction. I have no idea if that is true or not but most midwives steer clear of ultrasounds as much as possible.

So was that about clear as mud
