My daughter got hit on her bike today :( (shes ok though)

My 16 year old decided not to take PE this year so Im making her ride her bike to and from school. On her way home today she was riding on the sidewalk and this car pulled out into the driveway and hit her on her bike. It knocked her over and her stuff all over the street, but the only contact it made with her was her finger got caught between the car and the handlebars. The lady asked if she was ok and then left.

Part of me says that she asked if she was OK so at least she did that. The other part says my kid is a minor and she shouldve given her information (name, DL#, insurance, etc) or waited for an adult to make the "Shes OK" determination. I called the police department and my daughter only knows it was a white car so I can file a police report because technically it was a hit and run but there really isnt anything they can do becuase 1/3 of all the cars in the city are white. She did say if I changed my mind I can just walk into the police station to file a report.

So........what would you have done? Is it enough that the lady asked her if she was OK? I feel like if I hit a kid on a bike I would ABSOLUTELY wait for someone to come get them before I left. If I file a report and the lady gets caught for hit and run Im sure that would be devastating. But Im really angry that she left my daughter there hysterical. If you hit a kid would you leave if they told you they were ok?

So sorry your DD got hit.
Unfortunately it is one of the big hazards of biking these days. People just don't look where they are going. Bikers are getting hit all the time.
DH bikes to work quite a bit, and he has been hit twice (and I will tell you he is really careful about where he goes and watching out for the cars, and absolutely obeys all traffic laws). Pretty much every commuter biker that I know has been hit by a car. Fortunately only two of them ended up in the hospital because of it, and they are ok now.

Honestly, I would file the police report. I think it is just ridiculous the way people drive these days, and hitting a kid and leaving? She deserves a ticket.

I would file a report. I would be sooooo upset if my daughter got hit and the cops weren't called and a police report wasn't filed. She should have called the cops or at least waited until you knew about it and got there. So sorry mama, I'm glad she's ok though.

I would file a report also. That is insane that she didn't wait to actually determine if your dd was okay.

Yes, Bikers get it a lot these days, but your child is a minor and should have been checked over to make sure nothing was broken, sprained ect...def. file a report! keep us posted!

Also, was it a house she pulled out of. What kind of place was the driveway she pulled out of. If your daughter remembers the place where it happened, it's likely that the woman is a frequent visitor and you can find out who this person is.

Re: My daughter got hit on her bike today :( (shes ok though)

Thank you mommas for making my feelings feel validated My hubby is not saying its my daughters fault but he is saying again and again that you cant expect people to know where you are, you have to be proactive (which is true but shes already been hit!).

It was actually a church parking lot and Im gogint to go back on monday and see if there is a white car there. I cant imagine why a car would be at the church on a friday afternoon unless she works there or was there for a reason-you know? I called the church and left a voicemail for them.

Basically the police station said that yes, they could work there, but it just as easily couldve been someone who pulled in and turned around. They said it was speculation and they cant do anything about it based on speculation. I still intend to go back monday to check.

I think I will wait till monday though in case she is there and I have more information for the report

Again, thanks mommas

Re: My daughter got hit on her bike today :( (shes ok though)

even if it hadn't been a bike, since the lady was pulling out of a parking lot onto the street she should have been on the lookout for cars. So either way she's in the wrong. And then to just leave without even waiting until an adult got there is totally irresponsible IMO. What if it had been a three year old riding his bike on his sidewalk? The driver should've been more careful.
