Smile Cow Milk Question....

My daughter will be 11 months on the 16th, and we have been nursing just great but I do have concerns. When can I know is time to stop? She's very attached to her mommy milk now so I know I can't wean her just yet, and I'm not taking it away till she shows no interest in it anymore. But what concerns me is I don't know how much she drinks so when I do eventually introduce her to cows milk how much do I give her? How often? Do I water it down at first (someone told me to add some water)? I want to be prepared in case one day she just plains out refuses to nurse

Re: Cow Milk Question....

First off, do you have any family history of milk allergies or lactose intolerance? If you do, then the longer you wait to introduce it, the better! And the longer you b/f, the less chance she'll have of allergies, or at least it will lessen their severity. I've heard it suggested in a lot of places that waiting AT LEAST a year is good policy for dairy products...she's getting the best stuff from you, kwim? No need to rush the other.

Chances are very slight that she would completely refuse to nurse...if she did, it would probably be a nursing strike and not weaning anyway. Most likely she'll slowly and gradually eat more solids and nurse less.

If you'd like to start helping her learn to use a cup, why not pump some breastmilk for her and give it in a sippy? Or, plain water. We add a tablespoon or so of non-sweetened fruit juice sometimes for some flavour. Oh, and I found that both of my boys had the best success with a straw-style sippy cup -- and it's supposedly better for their oral development.

Re: Cow Milk Question....

around a year we introduced molly to a sippy cup & milk. our sippy cups are small (about 4 oz) so we would just give her like a 1/2 or 1/4 full cup with either water or organic whole milk. we would also let her practice drinking from a regular cup & with a straw. she never drank a lot and it definitely didn't impact her nursing.

she's almost 20 months now and still nursing quite frequently and drinking less than 6 oz of milk a day. and now if she's thristy and wants to nurse she says so and if she wants her cup of milk she tells me. so i think you'll find that you just naturally come in to figuring out how much to give and don't need to obsess over exactly how many ounces etc.
