Question Pumping - Is there some kind of trick to it?

My DH and I just welcomed our first little one just over a month ago and I have been EBF since then. I had planned to pump and set aside a stash of milk in the freezer, but my few attempts at pumping have been less than stellar. It took me an entire day to pump 2oz on my first attempt...and the other tries have been even worse. Is there some kind of trick to pumping? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Some mamas have problems getting much out when they pump. Some just don't respond well to it. Try to relax and either look at your babe or a pic of your babe. Sometimes smelling your babe or a blanket can help.
Just keep trying! It can be difficult for some!

Unfortunately, that might be all you can get. I'm lucky if I can get 2 oz after a whole day of pumping. Some people just can't let down to it.

You'll get the hang of it just breath and relax. It helps me to actually "try" (at least think about) feeling that let down tingle... It usually works for me. But My DS didn't eat more than 2 oz per feeding (every 2 hours) until he was over 2 months old... He gained weight fine he just didn't eat tons. Maybe yours in a small eater too?

It took me about 2 weeks before my body started to respond to the pump. Don't give up! Oh and what kind of pump are you using?

I had a hard time pumping with my electric pump. I bought a Medela hand pump and I found I can pump a whole lot if I do it in the morning while my DS nurses.

I could never get much either, until I got an Isis pump. I also lean over because I tend to let down when I'm bending over.

I have an Avent Isis and don't pump often. When I do I look at or think about the baby. Drinking a tall cool glass of water helps me. I have cheated before, too. I start nursing the baby and do a quick switcheroo to the pump. Not sure how sterile that is, but sometimes that is the only way to get er started. Good luck!

Re: Pumping - Is there some kind of trick to it?

The amount I get is HUGELY dependent upon how much water I've been drinking. When I returned to work with DS1 if I forget to drink a TON of water I would barely get anything, but if I paid attention to my intake I would get 4oz per breast.

I also agree that my production increased dramtically after the first couple months. And I can never get anything trying to sneak a punp in between feedings. Once you are pumping without sharing with the little one you get more then too. Trying to build up a frozen supply in advance of returning to work was close to impossible and very frustrating with both sons.

Hang in there!

also, you want to be sure the horns fit well. the standard size that comes with the pump is not the best size for everyone. here is a link to sizing info. http://www.medela.com/newfiles/faq/b...hield_fit.html
