What would you do re: nighttime?

Hey all!

My two older kids (4 and almost 3) are in disposable dipes at night. We have tried cloth (usually pockets, pul and fleece) and while they don't leak at night - they REEK of ammonia and they literally cry when they urinate for the entire rest of the day because it's so sore and it burns. I assumed that I had a buildup issue BUT now my littlest (6 mo) is in cloth at night (we used sposies before, thinking she would get it too!). Her fitteds are soaked but her bottom is never red and irritated.

So ... I assume NOW that perhaps my older kids just have very strong urine. Does this mean I shouldn't attempt to use cloth with them again? I am soooo sick and tired of shelling out good $$$ that I could be spending on cute cloth, LOL!

What do you think?

I am having the same problem with my nighttime dipes.....any and all suggestions appreciated!

I'm one of those mamas who adds a wee bit of bleach every couple of months to my dipes to ward off stinkies. You can also use color safe bleach.

There are other ways but this works for us and not bad effects.

something that often times does contribute to the smell of urine is the water intake. How much water are your tots drinking? I really push water with my 8 yr old daughter, or her urine is just gross. The whole bathroom will stink after she pees. I cant imagine if she was still in pull ups.

is true it can be water intake problems
so buildup has been discarded, is nto taht?? sure??might be

Whenever my dipes get the amonia smell.. I strip them. What did you stuff the pocket with? I find terry holds the least stink. My 4yo occasionally wears a trainer I made for him w/pul, fleece, and knit terry - I've never had it stink. However when I put pfs or even flannel fitteds on my 2yo at night, I've had stink.. though not with the knit terry dipe I made for him.

I have had that problem with my older kids, too. I used a tinsy bit of bleach on the prefolds, or bleach alternative mostly. I was using mostly prefolds and pul then.

I switched to wool and the problem got better. Also got better with fleece liners -still mostly using prefolds - toddler with hemp doubler or hemp prefold.

It's gotten better now, but now he 'wakes' in his sleep to pee and we usually find him sleeping in the bathroom floor, lol!
