Re: Help needed! 13 week appt. today..bulging fluid at base of head/down syndrome?

Mama.. I have no experience with this but wanted to let you know you and baby will be in my thoughts and prayers. I really hope everything turns out to be just fine.

Thank you... the more I look the more I'm kinda thinking it might be a nuchal fold issue. I just read that they are done right at this point in pregnancy and the space at the base of the neck is enlarged.. just like with ours. But again the space wasn't black so not sure exactly.

My only advice is to try and stay busy and pro-active until you meet with a specialist. Everyone's a dr in this world.. and as I always say, "I google a headache and come out with cancer." Out of concern, though see if they can rule out cystic hygroma. hugs to you keep us all posted

Re: Help needed! 13 week appt. today..bulging fluid at base of head/down syndrome?

Clara wasn't diagnosed w/ that via u/s, but after the triple screen levels came back elevated we were sent for a level II ultrasound. I was told that the chances of her having either DS of CF was 1/12000 (I think). On that u/s it showed that she had something called echogenic bowel, and the skin at her neck measured thick. Both of those made the Dr. think that she had Down Syndrome. Actually, the Dr. told me that there was NOTHING other than Down Syndrome and Cystic Fibrosis that could cause the echogenic bowel. I found out later that it was not true at all. It didn't help me at that appt though, when I was upset beyond belief. I knew that we would adore her no matter what, but it was still such a shock. They then said that the chances of her having one of those was 1 in 7. We got an amnio done so that we could be 100% prepared upon her birth. The amnio results came back completely normal. She was born without any bowel problems also.

I know it's hard, but try not to worry much until you've had the other ultrasound and then RESEARCH what you're told about that u/s. Those machines can see a lot, but can also see things that end up to be absolutely nothing

Sounds like they are sending you for a nuchal translucency. For it to be truly accurate they will also draw blood and combine the results with those of the ultrasound measurements of the nuchal folds at the back of the baby's neck. Then, if you choose to do so, you can combine those results with the results of the quad screen (usually done around 16 wks) for even more information. However, all these tests are screening tests and can not tell you definitively if your baby has Down's Syndrome. If your quad screen comes back with an elevated risk level you may be offered an amnio.

For what it's worth, the measurements of the nuchal fold done on regular ultrasound equipment and by someone without special training are quite inaccurate.

I had the nuchal translucency us done twice but baby moved too much for us to get good readings. It does sound like that's what they're talking about. You can always put a call in to you ob or the us place and ask exactly what they'll be doing for your own peace of mind.

I just wanted to let you know, that if your baby does have Down syndrome, you will be in for a wonderful treat. My 3 year old is an absolute joy, and I wouldn't trade her for the world.

I have no idea if that is what your next appt will show, but if it does, and you want to talk about it, please feel free to PM me.

You might look up turner's syndrome. I think that often the baby will have edema in the neck area, too. That's also a very easy genetic issue to live with. My best friend has it, in fact. Life is normal for her. ) Best wishes!
