Update: #162 (Hugs to everyone) Bulging fluid at base of head/down syndrome?

Did you by chance get any photos of the ultrasound? Maybe if we could see what you're describing we could help you research? Only if you're comfortable with that though.

I actually did go back to the Dr. office yesterday and asked for the u/s pics. They are really hard to see though. I'll try and scan them in their original form and then also circle the irregular area in another shot. I'm off to chaperone my sons field trip which I have no mind to do... but already signed up for. I'll scan the shots when I get home around 1.

btw- Dr. clarified more for me as I told her I needed a little clearer picture on what we might be dealing with. She said she didn't see fluid in the brain, ancephalus (sp?), and didn't see a nuchal fold issue per say. Where the abnormality is is more towards the back crown of the head. To me it almost looks like the brain is protruding way out from the skull and then there is a small black horseshoe space/fluid? within the protruding area which is 'curious'.
Dr. said she again has no exact idea what she is looking at even after 25 years. That's why shes so quick to send me off to a specialist as she too wants to know. So not sure if that is comforting or not.
Is it good that she's never seen this before.. don't know.


Thanks to everyone for all the reassuring advice and well wishes.. I really need them right now. And if the baby is down syndrome we are ok with that, as we too know that they are very loving children. We worry that it could be something worse though and baby with have major medical problems.

I'd be willing to be this is "one of those things" where the doc sees something weird on the u/s and then the next time they look it's not there... Hopefully the higher level equipment at the specialist's office will shed more "light" (as it were) on the issue.

I'm thinking good thoughts for you.

I have to agree with the PP. After looking at the photo's, I personally think it's not attached (whatever it is). It doesn't have a real shape to it either.

Im willing to bet that it will be gone soon.

If I could make a suggestions.... Im willing to bet that there are some ultrasound tech's on this forum. Can't hurt to post in off topic and ask. Ask for any ultrasound tech's to PM you or to come view this thread. Maybe they can shed some light on this for you.

My gut feeling is that it is NOT down's or anything else serious. It looks to me (and I am by no means a doctor) like it's a pocket of fluid. If you notice, the baby gives off this white glow. The mass that we see is a gray and black color, much like the fluid around the baby. So my "guess" is that it's a pocket of skin with fluid inside. Now, that could be a million things. Chances are it could vanish (if this is the case) or it could be something minor like a cyst.

Please keep us posted as to what they find. I'll be praying for you and your baby!

first of all I'm so sorry!! My first baby had a double cystic hygroma (sp) on the base of her head- she was diagnosed at 14 wks w/ turners syndrome. we only found out bc I started bleeding- just be positive and keep your head up! I know how scary it is but you can get through it!!

I'm trying to do some searching around to see what I can find for the OP. While googling different medical conditions, I came across this (though I didn't know that's what it was called. I found the medical term first).

Thank you for doing some searching.. its sweet of you to take the time to do that. I'd also looked up Turners Syndrome yesterday but when the doctor said she at my 2nd meeting with her that she didn't actualy see fluid but more grey matter (tissue), I didn't think it was Turners. Only info I found about Turners and ultrasounds mentioned that you would see the extra fluid near the spine and neck. So I'm kinda leaning away from it.....

My thing still is.. why did she mention Sarah Palins son... Hmmmm....

Awe your little bean is so cute.
I wouldn't worry, really. I've heard so many problems with things being diagnosed from a US so early on, sometimes it's just too early to tell.
Either way, it won't change the way you feel about your upcoming LO.

I was uninsured until my 8th month of pregnancy with my DS. I passed all those tests and U/S's becasue I didn't care if anything was wrong. I knew I was happy that I was expecting another baby and finding out any abnormalitites wouldn't change how much I wanted them.
