Anyone heard of TSP -Tri-Sodium Phosphate?? Allen's suggested it....

So, I called Allen's about the detergent to see if it is used well w/ Hard Water......or if it leaves a build up in cloth diapers if used w/ hard water....

He said that some people w/ hard water use it on their cloth diapers and have no problems.....they rave about it.

He then said if I have a problem w/ hard water and the Allen's working, I should go to the local hardware store and get TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate) to soften my water. Anyone heard of this, or is it safe to use on a baby? Is it the same thing that is in Calgon?? He said it was about the same.....

I've heard of it, but have no idea if it's safe for diapers.

I've heard of it too. Phosphates used to be in most detergents, and they worked better than they do now. Then, it was discovered that they are harmful to the environment. Something to think about if you are CDing for environmental reasons.

I have heard of it. I haven't looked for it in quite some time though. I used to use it when I was 19 or so to clean. I used to get it at Smart & Final. I have no idea if it is safe for diapers though.

OOh, I don't know if the TSP is a good idea. That's what we used to wash the walls with before we painted and I remember it being pretty harsh. But the walls got clean! so maybe in a small amount with a lot of water it would be ok.

TSP is in cheerios.... well the frosted one's anyway. It's used as a preservative but I don't know how it would do for laundry.

I've seen it at Home Depot. I have no idea about using it in the wash, though.

Thanks Mamas!! I did a search and it can be found at Lowe's in the paint dept. It is used for cleaning walls. Also, TOXIC if swallowed!!! I don't want my kids to have a chance of getting into it. Also causes skin irritation. Then, I read that it causes fungus/algea to grow. Which, is why it is not in our washing detergent anymore.
