Why can't the microfiber touch the skin?

I have heard before that you sould put the microfiber "in" the diaper and was curious as to why. will it irritate the skin or just seems that it would be uncomfortable to the baby? I always put it inside the pocket or prefold but am still very curious. Thanks in advance.

It dries out the skin by pulling the moisture out of it.

It works differently than microFLEECE which pulls moisture down to whatever material underneath but doesn't dry out the skin.

If you handle a lot of microfiber, your hands will start to dry out since the material will suck the moisture out of your fingers. Imagine what it would do to a baby's bottom. HTH!

It is designed to suck moisture away from the skin, so if you put it by the skin it can suck moisture out of the skin. When you stuff pockets, you might notice that your hands get dry and wierd feeling, it's because the microfiber sucks the moisture out. I think I also remember reading somewhere that it can cause really small cuts on the skin, but I don't know if that's true or not.

Re: Why can't the microfiber touch the skin?

I only have one peice of microfiber in my diaper collection. I wasn't sure if I would ever use it. Well, two days ago I finally did. I used it to stuff a cotton velour pocket dipe. I thought I put it under the hemp stuffing but apparently I didn't. When I took DD's dipe off she was bone dry.

It looked so weird and just seemed wrong. Even in her little thigh folds not a drop of moisture. And that's w/ a layer of velour over it. I will never use it again.

Wow, I would never have guessed that! I will make sure to always put it under the cloth. Thanks for the info, I was dying to know that lol. Now you have me curious about other inserts as all I use is MF!! I might have to try some hemp or something out now. Thanks

Hemp doesn't dry like MF does it? We are new to CD and DH put DD to bed last weekend w/ a prefold MF insert and hemp on top. Is this ok?

This is why I use Polar Babies - Microfleece topped hemp.
Although I do have a question...when the doubler gets wet the liquid beads up on the MF before sinking in. That doesn't mean it's repelling, right?

My mom (gramma) is an "old school" cloth diaperer, and not used to these new-fangled pocket dipes, anyhoo, she put the microfiber insert next to the skin a couple times and dd was fine?? But she now knows, they go inside the pocket

Re: Why can't the microfiber touch the skin?

Because microfiber is creeeeepy! The feel of microfiber squicks me out when it touches my fingers. I get shivers thinking of putting that next to baby's skin. I used mostly microfiber towels to stuff my pockets and love the way it holds wetness, but oh how I hated touching the stuff. I cringed when I had to sew microfiber. Such a creepy feeling!

I hadn't noticed dry hands or anything handling my microfiber inserts, but thanks for the "how it works" explanation, I was wondering what the deal with the material was!
