Yeah they can be super deep, as long as it is not dripping or leaking anything ( spinal fluid) you are doing well!
THe reason why they did a MRI and not an US on him is that he has a light patch of hair above it and some dark thick wirey hairs in it.

my daughter has this. they checked it at birth thoroughly and said hers was nothing to worry about. I just make sure I clean it very well. I have a mild form of one as well so i know thats where she got it.

It sounds like a sacral dimple. Addie was born with a shallow sacral dimple. We were very concerned because she had a skin tag in the area also. Both can be signs of tethered cord, neural tube defects, as well as other genetic defects. We had Addie's checked out by a pediatric neurologist and he was not concerned about hers because of how shallow it was.

This is going to sound weird but I have a similar thing on the heel of my hand. I have never met anyone else with it. It looks like a hole but you cant see the bottom.

Re: Hole in baby's back near her bottom?

My current foster daughter has a sacral dimple, and thankfully an ultrasound was done shortly after she was born. Her spinal cord is tethered to her spinal column, and she will need to have surgery at some point to "untether" the cord. The dimple doesn't even look very deep, and I can easily keep it clean. I wonder if she would have been tested if she had been born in another hospital... where she was born was not just a maternity ward of a regular hospital, but a hospital specifically for women and infants, and in general, they are very thorough.

That is what it sounds like to me too. Eli has one. I noticed it when we came from the hospital and I asked my doc. He put on some magnifying glasses and inspected it closely, but said it was harmless and to keep it clean.

Re: Hole in baby's back near her bottom?

It is estimated that up to 20% of the population has spina bifida occulta and doesn't know it. My DS has spina bifida (myelomengocele) so I've looked into this stuff quite a bit. It does need to be checked out. It may be just fine and not affect her at all, but tethered cord can be serious if it is not treated. If it is SBO, she may need testing on her kidneys and bladder since it is the lowest part of the spinal cord that that controls the bowels and bladder. Do you guys have a children's hospital close? If so, I would see if they have a neurology or spina bifida clinic and call to see what they suggest she do, especially since it seems her doctor is no help.

Riley is close 45 ish minutes away. In fact my son is going to an eye specialist them later this month. I will suggest she request a second opinion if he just brushes her off.

Yep! My DD has one.

It's really nothing to worry about if (I've been told it's more of an until than an if) it gets infected.

GL!
