well, not really. I don't wanna "Cold Turkey" him like I've seen others do. He's eating more and more "big people" food, but still wakes up 3/4 times a night to nurse. What can I do to point us in the right direction?

I night-weaned DS at about that time. When he woke up fussing, I let him fuss (not cry) for a few minutes (not very long, 2-3 minutes max). I noticed that he started going back to sleep after a minute or two. So I tried it each time he woke and fussed, and within a week or two he was sleeping through the night just fine.

LLL stand point is don't offer but don't refuse. You can easily do some distracting to help with this.

Remember there are alot of benifts to nursing that don't stop at age 1.

Not sure if you cosleep or not but we did. I also moved dd into her crib at the same time. It worked very well! Good luck!

What a wonderful article! Thanks! I have let him cry - he gets louder and louder rather quickly. PLUS, I can hear his belly growl... That's why I haven't stopped yet - though I hear they are not hungry. When my belly growls, I'm hungry.

Yeah, I have wondered about the belly growling thing, too!

I just recently was able to cut out night nursing within the past few weeks. YAY!

I did read the above article and used some of the ideas in it. Like picking the time between nursing. I planned to just cut one at a time and we struggled for awhile and then all of a sudden it started working. Now he does still wake up some nights (multiple times some nights). But I don't have to nurse him. We do give hime water if he reaches for it.
We are now about 50% sleeping from bedtime to 5ish in the morning. I won't nurse him until after 5am.

Maybe you could offer a snack and nurse right before bedtime to help with the tummy growl. Just a thought. I know I can't sleep when I am hungry. My youngest seems more growly at night than my older two were. He also has been the most challenging sleeper (non-sleeper LOL). Oh, and he gets louder and louder, too! Sounds like our babes have similar temperments.

I've been doing the Dr. Jay thing. Nothing form 11 - 6. This morning it was a little after 5 - only because I was SOSOSOSOSOSOSO engorged and soaking wet!
I've been able to sing him back to sleep and he's not been waking up as much. Almost like the nursings would wake him up - like if I fed him at 10 - he'd wake up at 2 - and 6. Like it was a sugar level he was trying to correct.
Anyway, so far so good. Tomorow night will be the real challenge - not picking him up.

Don't worry about following the "rules." I still pick up yds more often than I would like to calm him back down or get him back to sleep. It is slowly getting better, though.
I just have to do what feels right for us.

Last night, he only wokd once, and just talked for a couple minutes and went back to sleep. I nursed about 5 and he went back to bed.
