3rd birthday party game ideas?

My son's third birthday is coming up. We are doing a backyard barbeque at 5 pm. Have you ever attended a birthday party that had excellent games or activities that were a lot of fun for the kids (and not a lot of work or money for the adults)? The kids will be under 5.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Re: 3rd birthday party game ideas?

I love your sceen name, OP!

IME, very loosly organized activities work best for the age group you're talking about. Like a playset (if you have one), a wading pool/sprinkler kind of thing, bounce house, hunt for something in the yard (like easter egg hunt-just have it match the party theme), hide and seek, etc. At my DD's 4th bd party (butterfly theme) the kids liked flying from flower to flower (posterboard cut outs) while music played and landing on one when it stopped. (then I'd call out a flower color and pass out a prize-I kept track so that everyone got one) Duck, duck goose, simon says,

If you're up to leading musical type stuff-the hokey pokey, chicken dance, if you're happy and you know it, or any other action songs you can get creative with.

Games where a kid is "out" or with a lot of structure don't seem to work too well.
