Flu Shots ???

So far i've been extremely iffy about these, every year I refuse and every year i'm pressured by the DR. but i'm sticking to my guns and refusing this year also , unless I get some Mind Changing news about why i should!

Anyways I want to see how many of you get the Flu shots for your Kiddos and Why or WHY NOT?

Re: Flu Shots ???

I find they get sicker from the shot then if they had jsut gotten the actual flu.

Once they get the shot they are sick for 2-3 weeks.

The flu only lasts 3-5 days at the most.....

Re: Flu Shots ???

nope, the one year we got them, we got the flu, which they said could not come fromt he shot, but since we got the flu anyway and the protect against the previous years more prevalent strain, it seems pointless to me. I've had many flus and always got over them within a few days. To me I'd rather risk a couple days of throwing up than side effects of the shot ON TOP of getting the flu, especially in my LO's, I'm picky about thier shots anyway

Hmmm, not my experience. The flu shot protects against Influenza, not a stomach virus. The flu typically lasts 1-2wks in a healthy person, but much longer in an unhealthy or weakened immune-system person, child, etc. My good friend was hospitalized from the TypeA as was her son who was just an infant.
eta- you can also opt to get a non-live virus injx.

Re: Flu Shots ???

We all get them. 2 of my daughters have asthma, one fairly bad. If they got the flu, it would probably mean a hospital stay. As far as getting the flu from the flu shot, it is not possible. The shot contains a dead virus. It is a myth that you can get it from the shot.

If my daughters didn't have asthma, I probably wouldn't get one (mostly because I wouldn't take the time to do it). I don't know if I would still get them for the kids since I've never been in that position. We didn't get them before my 2nd daughter's asthma diagnosis, but she was diagnosed fairly young.

My DS will not be getting the Flu shot. We are pretty picky about his shots and this is one that we feel is unnecessary.

Re: Flu Shots ???

it actually is quite possible to get the flu from the flu shot because of a couple things, the flu shot changes from year to year, it also changes from dr to dr or clinic to clinic, somtimes you get the live virus which is meant to give you a less severe flu but the flu none the less, or the dead virus which is supose to make you build up immunitys and stop you from getting the flu, either way, I never get the flu unless I get the flu shot and I've ended up in the hospital for it. So, myself, my hubby and my daughter do not and will not get the flu shot. I understand you feeling you need to get it because of your daughters, and thats fine. I'm just letting you know that it's not a myth.

Nope. We only selectively vaccinate and the flu is just one of those things I don't think I need to vaccinate my kids for.

Also, most brands of the flu shot still contain mercury. They have some mercury free brands but you have to know which ones in order to make sure you aren't giving your child a high dose of mercury (which has been filtered out of all other vaccines at this point).

Re: Flu Shots ???

Flumist is not a good idea. It is a LIVE virus and a very good way to pass the flu around. The injection is a killed virus, but still shown to be the same as a placebo in children 2 and under. I like the info this site has on the flu shot:
