Re: What do you wish you knew then? CDing a newborn

OT... but all these newborn threads aren't helping my baby bug.

i think, not from any experience, that i might just use sposies till the cord (and meconium) are gone.

That's my plan! My dc were only in newborn clothes/diapers for a weeks so I'm not going to buy cloth to only be able to use it for a short amount of time. I'd like to start at about 2 weeks in smalls? Probably just pfs and covers for us.

Re: What do you wish you knew then? CDing a newborn

I wish I had more smaller sized fitteds. I had smalls which did fit her but they were wide in the crotch area and made it look like she was riding a horse. Here is a KL0 on her when she was a few weeks old.

We used KL0, Dream-eze, and Swaddlebees with BSWW and Proraps. Next time I'll definitely get more newborn sized fitteds, maybe mutts, and some wool.

Re: What do you wish you knew then? CDing a newborn

Well, my NB is only 3 days old, but I find myself wishing a few things.

1. That I had more tshirts, not onesies.
2. Had more XS or NB wool (even though she was 8 lbs 14 ozs)
3. Orange edge prefolds are nice, but still thick... green edge 4x6x4 are awesome, but it would be nice if they were trimmed.
4. Skip NB AIOs, fitteds, altogether... way too bulky!

The meconium really hasn't been a big deal. She's pooped in 2 fitteds, leaving no stains, and 1-2 prefolds, with only one having a light stain. I'll wash tomorrow and try sunning to let you know if it comes out... but honestly, I'm not worried about it. They really don't use that many diapers the first day or so when there's all the meconium, so it really isn't a HUGE deal to sacrifice a diaper or two, right?

What will you use for covers besides wool? Sometimes we had poo in everything at once and having PUL backups was a lifesaver.

That is COOL. Good job mama!

That said, I learned a lot.
1. Some babies are in nb dipes wayyyy longer than people say. DS wore some of his for 9-12 weeks! Good thing I had good dipes.
2. That pfs and covers (orange edge are perfect IMO) are the simplest and easiest way to go. Fitteds became a pain for the short time they were on.
3. That I proraps. So simple on that tiny baby, esp. with the umbi dip.
4. That, sleep deprived, I really didn't care how cute the diaper was- I just needed it to be on and absorbing.
5. That wool in the summer is a nice idea but that's about it. I didn't have the heart to put him in a wool soaker in 90 degree heat!
6. How much SNAPPIS save your covers from blowouts.
7. That cloth from day 1- minute 1- is not hard at all. And so precious!

GL mama! I have loved cloth diapering my newborn.

Re: What do you wish you knew then? CDing a newborn

I wish I had bought more nb diapers since I bought mostly smalls since people said DD probably wouldn't wear the nb size for long...she did for @ 12 weeks so we had to use sposies part time since I thought that she would size up anytime.

I did learn that as much as I loved fitteds, they seemed bulky and if I did it all over again, I would have bought more nb pockets to go with the fitteds because the pockets were much trimmer and still contained everything. (I love my nb pockets from Dimple Cheeks-perfection for my tiny girl).

GL!

I wish I knew how long it would be before we fit in those infant sized prefolds that everyone said "you just fold them down, no problem." If I had only bought those (which is what I intended before i discovered DS and went crazy.) I would have been folding them in half for his tiny rise. Way to big. We loved our KL0s and xs VB (fitted and AIOs). But the KL0s held poop better.

Re: What do you wish you knew then? CDing a newborn

We have only used cloth diapers for about 2 years now. With DS3 I was afraid to cloth diaper from the start, he was tiny and nothing I bought fit him. I bought smalls and he was 6lbs, oops! So I couldn't put cloth on him for a few weeks and we skipped over the meconium stage completely.

With DS4 we used cloth from the beginning, we had zero stains from the meconium, and we have prefolds and nb fitteds like you. I think my only advice is make sure he is pointing down .

you really can't let wet dipes touch the cord. dd's got funky even though she was big and i had extra smalls. by the time the dipes didn't bother her cord, she needed smalls. should have just bought sposies and skipped the xsmalls.
