"Barking," forced cough in infant? <f>

My almost-4-month-old preemie seems to have her first illness, but the signs are puzzling me. As of the middle of last night, her breathing often sounds phlegmy, like she has postnasal drip or something, but she nurses fine! There's apparently NO congestion! And here's what bothers me: she'll occasionally cough, even out of a sound sleep, and the cough is really loud and forced-sounding. It reminds me of the bark of a seal, and it makes both me and my husband worry that she's having trouble breathing.

No fever. No runny nose. No lassitude or other signs of illness. Her daddy and older sister both have a bit of congestion.

Does this sound like a normal cold? Should I take her to the dr?

Are you sure its not the Croup? I dont have a premie but my older two kids both had the croup and it was a horrid barking cough that got worse at night.. I'd call the Nurse at the ER.

That is definitely croup, and seeing how you have a preemie, and this is RSV season, you need to get her seen.

Totally agree. You need to get her seen. Premies are much more vulnerable to RSV.

Croup, huh? Oh dear. I'll call the after-hours nurse. Thanks, mamas!

yep croup. It is dangerous in a small child so def get your baby in. DS has had it 4 times in a year(first time was 7 months) and he was admitted straight into childrens because he was having strider and couldnt breath. Now we have the breathing treatment steroid at home. He just got over his last round a few days ago.

Definitely croup! We just got over this. They gave ds a steroid shot and some follow-up meds and he is all better now. I was really worried.
