Baby signing??

Hi all.
I've been seeing posts about baby signing and was wondering if I could hear about how this works? I don't want to sound dumb, but can you really communicate to young babies this way and do they really understand?

I think it would be great to try, but I'm just wondering what others experiences are.

Re: Baby signing??

We had great success with my son Aidan. We taught him just basics...

more
please
help
drink
eat
want
up
sleep

It really helped with his frustration level. Instead of screaming when he wanted a drink, he did the sign. It really CAN work. Now, my younger son refuses to sign. He hits at our hands and screams when we try to make him sign, so we've pretty much given up. Hey, if signing makes him MORE frustrated, why do it?

He is very verbal though and already has quite a few words.

Hey, I just realized, its you!! Punky padding. I've been e-mailing back and forth with you about a custom. Shipping the shirt tomorrow. I LOVE your dipes!!

Mine doesn't make sense either. LOL. j9 is like my name---j-nine (Janine) and lots of people called me that. In high school and college I played basketball, so I was a shooting guard and my nickname was
shooter. Anyways, not like you asked. I wished I would have picked another name too now.

I much prefer customs too. It's neat to see everyone's individual tastes.

I can't wait to get one of your dipes. I'm sure I'll be back. I keep looking for funky tees now.

By the way, how old is your daughter that you're signing with?

Re: Baby signing??

She's 7 months. I haven't tried it yet, just wanted to know more.

btw, not that you asked, lol! But my username stands for J-jesse, A-aaron, D-daniel, E-emily, D-our last name and the hkr is hiker because I like to go hiking and backpacking. I've been using it for years on the backpacker and it never occured to me to change it. Sigh!

Re: Baby signing??

We also use signing time, both kids took to it quickly. my daughter has downs and leanred sighns quickly, she is sosmart!
they do learn to understand the sign because you work on it with them, by them watching the dvds, they get a visual, then they have the songs, like from baby signing time, then they have mama to help them learn to sign correctly, they do put two and two together, kids are very smart!

Re: Baby signing??

We have signed with both of our girls from around 9 months on. Maia took to it very quickly, but she also started speaking early. By 12 months she had about 10 signs and 20 words, I thought I was a genius at parenting. Sage is 17 months and has 3 signs and 4-5 words, she didn't do her first sign until 15 months even though we started at 9 months. She understands more signs though, she just won't sign back.

She signs

more
Please
Milky (she is still nursing)

She understands

drink
eat
sorry
play
help
stop
no (as a comand, we just shake our heads as an answer)
hurt
bath
dirty (diaper change, hands, face)

Even just knowing those 3 signs has greatly helped with her frustration level.
