making cereal?

Hi there! I still have 2 months before I start my DD on solids, but was wondering if it is possible to make the baby cereals? I got some samples in the mail and was reading them and OMG full of chemicals and crap. If someone could point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it!

Re: making cereal?

my 2 year old loves cream of rice cereal.... found withthe oatmeal and such in the grocery store.... it says it can be used for infant cereal. for my little guy we usually cut up a banana and mash it up when it's cooking.... he calls it banana mush and loves it. we make it really thick but you could add lots of BM, formula, or water I suppose and make it runny enough for an infant.

Your baby's first food doesn't need to be cereal. Avocado was my daughter's first and banana was second. I actually do rice and oatmeal cereal now that she is 15 months old. I buy organic and no yucky stuff in it. It is Nature's Best.

You could use plain oats. But, really, there's no reason why cereal has to be a baby's first food. You could just as easily introduce vegetables of fruits first.

the book Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron has some great recipes for homemade cereals.

No, not really. Some cereals are iron fortified, but it's not necessary, and for some babies the extra iron constipates them.

Yes, vegs and fruit can be first. Some cultures even do meat first.

I just bought some cereals for DS to try eventually. I got Moulin Abenakis brand, which only contains organic cream of brown rice. They had an oat variety as well.

Re: making cereal?

if the reason you are starting cereal is for the iron, then you have to buy an iron-fortified cereal. IIRC, in super baby food she says the recipes for making your own cereal are once the baby is getting iron from other dietary sources.

if you don't care about the iron, it's super easy and you don't even need the book: grind up 1/4c. of rice in food processor or blender. cook in 2c. of water.
you're done. the ratio is the same for oats. i'm not sure about other grains though..we haven't gotten to those yet.
