WWYD? Re: improper carseat usage

Yesteraday when I was walking into my church I saw someone in our church who has an infant car seat forward facing. The baby is just going to be 9 months in the next few days. I have seen what can happen when they are turned too soon with a proper front facing car seat, I can only imagine what would happen in an infant seat that is not even meant to be forward facing.

So my question is would you say something to them? I am not one to poke in someone's business and I felt bad saying something but I did. WWYD???

Re: WWYD? Re: improper carseat usage

How did they respond when you said something and how did you say it? Is the baby getting big for the seat? I have said things before if the situation was safe. Church=safe, middle of downtown detroit=not safe. What state do you live in? If it is a state with a rearfacing law, you could call in the license plate number. I have also left notes on the windowshield. The one I left for the same situation your described said "the infant seat you have installed forward facing is not made to be install that direction as it is a rearfacing only seat. In a crash your child would most likely be ejected form the vehicle which could result in severe injury or even death. Please read your manufacturer book and install you seat in the correct direction. You can find a car seat tech in your area by going to www.seatcheck.org, or calling (whatever phone number). A child passenger safety technician can help you choose a seat that will fit your child and keep him/her safe in the vehicle."

I would say something! It's hard, but that poor baby.... A couple of months ago we saw someone rear facing infant seat like that, we left a note on the car, which is easier than confronting someone at church, but I think it will be worth it.

Whenever I feel I'm able to say something in a loving way, I do! I also leave nice notes on cars! If I feel it's appropriate (I don't want to affend anyone income wise), I also tell people in this area (Minn/ND) that our public health gives seats to families for free & very low cost!

Re: WWYD? Re: improper carseat usage

I tend to strike up a conversation...

Look how big little (whatever the baby's name is) is getting! Chat a bit...

What carseat are you guys using? We're thining ahead and I didn't recognize yours, I haven't ever seen any carriers that could go forward facing...

Based on their response.... I go lots of ways.

I've approached people I don't know in friendly conversation.... only once did I get a weird get away from me look (and LOL that was a friend). I actually had a lady ask me to help her in stall the carseat she had in her car-- she had her 18 month old (head far over the top of the seat, not buckled all the way because the belts were too short) in their infant seat.... because she couldn't figure out how to instal the convertible seat. But I installed it (RFing ) and she was thrilled!

Re: WWYD? Re: improper carseat usage

I've also left notes on cars and called police... I was driving behind a car with three unrestrained (as in totally) kids who were probably between 2 and 5-- one was going from the front passenger seat tot he back bench in the van.... I followed them until the police caught up with where I was at and spotted the vehicle.

It may be rude to some, it may make someone's day worse... but I'd hate myself if I read abotu an accidnet where they were killed because of improper use of carseats.

On a similar note, it's way too common here to have people leave their sleeping kdis in the car while they run into stores.... I sat outside of a Toys R US for 45 minutse trying too sooth a teeny tiny baby who was hysterical while my husband tried to find the parent in the store -- it was hot, not horrid yet but not good..... police showed up and got the baby out....

omg! i had to call the police once for something similiar to that.
dh and i went out to a mall and we parked next to an SUV thath ad 3 or 4 small kids in it. car wasnt locked because they had the doors open. i didnt want to go up to the kids, so i stayed in our car and called the cops and waited until they got there. so sad! what if one of those kid ran out into the parking lot and got hit? or someone perv kidnapped the kids? i just cant imagine.

as for the OP: DEFINITLEY say something. why would someone even THINK of putting a bucket seat forward facing? that is just....mind boggling. and for a NINE month old.

Re: WWYD? Re: improper carseat usage

I know! I was really upset by this. I didn't talk to the mother I talked to the grandmother. (its a teen mommy and the seat was like this in the grandmother's car) I definately did it in a loving way and she wasn't offended. I just felt a little weird telling her, but its a very serious and I wouldn't want anything bad to happen. I just hope they respond. I offered to email her the crash test videos but she doesn't have email.
