Dylon Dye...Is it toxic?

I am trying out some prefolds....I read the sticky on dying dipes & thought it might be fun to dye them...but after looking at the Dylon website I was wondering; Is this stuff toxic? Can I get away with using koolaid?
Thanks Mamas!

Depends on what you are doing with it. I don't have any dylon on hand to read the insert but I would have to say that drinking it would be a big no-no. In all seriousness though, I wouldn't have my baby near when I was preparing it, just in case. You never know how much of the powder particles get into the air. Once it is dyed, set, rinsed, etc though I don't see it being harmful unless your child has super sensitive skin.
Koolaid will only dye fibres like wool and silk, not cotton. Sorry.

Re: Dylon Dye...Is it toxic?

Hi mama I agree with the pp. Koolaid just "stains" cotton, it doesn't dye it a nice vibrant color. Fabric dyes are chemicals and if breathed in or swallowed can be very harmful. I would recommend wearing a dust mask when mixing the dye and I wouldn't do it while your LOs are around. Don't eat, drink, or smoke when doing it and don't use any utensils or containers that you'll later use for eating.

However, once your clothing or diapers are done, they're perfectly safe! Just make sure you wash and wash until your water runs clear. You should also "fix" your dye by adding a soda ash solution to your dye bath. This causes the dye to permanently bond to the fabric. Once your fabrics are thoroughly washed they are safe and colorfast
