Good question. I have a snap press, but I don't know how I feel about adding snaps. Ugh. LOL. Lots to think about!

you could always do a trial run maybe... do you still have some mesh undies from your last birth? if you do put a prefold in and wear it around the house for awhile or while you sleep and see how it does. if you don't have any mesh undies some undies that are a little loose would probably work too.

For those of you who put in a hidden layer of PUL, do you use just a strip of PUL down the center, or do you put it in the wings too? I've always made mine with just fleece on the bottom (wings included), but I want to branch out and start making some with hidden PUL.

Re: Everything you need to know about mama cloth

i use pul on the entire thing when i do hidden, so yes in the wings.

also someone was asking about closures in another post, you can use velcro, or the snap tool from joann's if you don't have a press, or some people say even without a closure it is fine.

Re: Everything you need to know about mama cloth

Right now I'm using a bunch of pads that I made from red flannel. They work great, but I'm ready to branch out and "soup it up" a bit
I would like to back it with something (wool, fleece) and add some wings. I don't have a snap press. Any other ways to close the wings other than a pin? And are wings really that much more helpful as far as slippage?
Thanks!

I bought one of these to apply my own snaps:

You use a spool of thread and a hammer! It's so easy. Here's a pad making tutorial where someone uses the tool at the end: http://community.livejournal.com/diy_pads/205840.html

I think metal snaps work with cloth pads because they don't get washed nearly as often as diapers!

I'm not sure about the rest, I've been making mine (got my first period in December, 5 months postpartum) and I'm waiting on my next period to try them out!

Re: Everything you need to know about mama cloth

Question for you mama cloth sewing ladies....how many layers in a pad do you think you would need for a heavy wrap around? I really like Homemade mama's pads but I am BROKE. I have bamboo velour, do you think like the outer and then 2 layers and fleece back would work? I have some reg anti pill joanns fleece would that work for the back. Since I bought some of her pads I am afraid I am going to be a pad snob lol
