I only need Mon/Thur/Fri - but everything else fit. I told her that I would need care from 6:45AM - 3:45PM (9 hours) Mon/Thur/Fri. She responded and said she wanted $15 an hour!!! This is for me to drop my son off at her house and I provide food/snacks.

I responded and told her thank you very much for your response, but we just can't afford $135 a day ($405 a week) for drop off care. I didn't tell her that our current provider is $25 a day (she was a temp care though - through January so now I need somebody else). I also didn't tell her that DH's take home pay is only $64/day so she was asking more than double what he makes!

She responded back and said "What rate do you think is reasonable by the hour and we could possibly negotiate?"

I don't know what to do - I kinda want to ignore her, but I hate doing that to people. The thing is, there isn't a "reasonable" HOURLY rate for daycares - that is why they have lots of kids. Occasionally you will find the parent who just wants an extra kid or two for some spending change. $15/hr could be reasonable for a parents night out or an hour or two while you do your shopping, or for tutoring or lessons. But, does anybody here think $405 a week is reasonable for one kiddo three times a week while the parent works - that is $21K a year for three days a week care. I am obviously not what she is looking for.

I wish it was reasonable - I would quit my job and stay home with my baby and a couple of his playmates

Disclaimer - I am not saying childcare is in any way easy or should be paid low - I just can't afford that
I didn't read anything but your post, but I get paid $30K a year for babysitting and disciplining ~60 children daily...oh and when they are good I can get a lesson or two in. I'm a teacher!

She is asking way too much!

I found an organic mama to watch DS She charges $25 a day

One of the more expensive daycares in my area is that much!! Sunshine House I think. Someone keeping an extra kid at there house is usually MUCH cheaper! Unless they are at your house AND cleaning your house.

I agree with PP. $7/hour sounds reasonable.

But there is a difference from a Nanny to you having to bring your little one out at 6:45a.m. And that mom being able to stay home. I think that 25-35 a day is reasonable for your area.

Keep looking you'll fing the right person.

Before I had DD, I was making $17/hour as a nanny. I went to their house, cooked for, cleaned up after, and took care of their child. I also was the one to accompany her to multiple therapy sessions per week.

After I had DD, I went back to work for a few months, and made $14/hour. Again, I went to their house, cooked for (bottles), cleaned up after, and took care of their child. No therapy this time, but I had my 3 month old (at the time) DD with me, so my attention was split, therefore dropping my rate.

If I were to watch a child in my home, I would still make about $15/hour, but I was a professional, career nanny, AND I have an AA degree in Early Childhood Ed. Not that any other mother is inferior to me, but if you are a SAHM with no prior experience/education, you can not ask what a professional nanny (with our without a degree) would ask.

Anyway, . There is bound to be other, more affordable and APPROPRIATE options in your area. Good luck!

ETA: I just read that you found something that works. Congrats!!! And good job for standing your ground.

Re: $135 a day for daycare!!! I'm so frustrated :( (long)

For the past year I've kept a 2yo little girl (7a-6ish) and 3 days a week picked her brother up from kindergarten everyday and kept him from (2p-6ish). I provided food and sometimes they did too. I charged $30 a day and $45 if I had her brother too. It was good $$ and my kiddos enjoyed having the friends to play with. We just moved too far from them, but it was such a positive experience I'm thinking of doing it again. GL mama. Just tell her you are looking to pay $25-#$35/day and go from there. All she can do is say .
