Eating lunch meat while pregnant

Hi!

I just had an interesting discussion with my sister in law about eating lunch meat and being pregnant.

I thought I would get your ideas to help solve our differences. So is it really that bad?? Even once in a while to eat a turkey sandwich?

Thanks!

I don't eat it until I heat it to steaming first. Sometimes I put it back in the frig and re-chill it if I want a cold sandwich.

Its perfectly safe to eat as long as its been steamed or warmed up to kill anything that may be in the meat.

I've eaten both not heated and heated through 2 pregnancies and still do in this one and have been fine. Its not that the meat isn't safe, so much as there is a risk and most people just don't want to take it. If it concerns you...get it heated...like those at Quiznos or Firehouse...I've even asked Subway and my local Publix to heat the meat...its not that big of a deal..I just prefer not to have hot meat everytime.

I don't have a problem with it personally. I have eaten heated and not heated through my last 2 pregnancies. I am just not a fan of heated meat for a sandwich. I had a sandwich yesterday and my sister in law went off the deep end yelling about how bad it is and why would I harm my baby. That is why I was asking.

I eat lunchmeat out of the fridge about once a week. I did it during my pregnancy with DS and I am doing it again.

I eat lunch meat. The risk of getting listeria from lunch meat is about as high as your risk of getting hit by a car while walking down the street. As long as it's kept to a proper temperature and handled safely it should be okay. I trust the deli in my grocery store.

Thanks for the responses!! I need to stop listening to my sister in law and second guessing everything I do.

Yeah, I would tell her to mind her own business. If she thought you didn't know about it an was just informing you then oh well, but if you were already informed and made the choice to eat it it is really none of her business. There are so many choices to be made during pregnancy and parenthood and I can't stand when people think that it's their job to tell everyone what they are doing wrong.

This is my 4th pregnancy and I have eaten lunch meat w/out steaming it during all of them. If I have a ham/cheese sandwich, then I will heat the ham first. I usually end up craving sub sandwiches and personally think I make them pretty good, lol. So....I have quite a few of those. And I love salami and you just can't heat that.
