bottom up. I plug it in first and keep it lit so I can put everything where it needs to be.

me too. seems like th lights get clustered together really pretty at the top, but by the time i get to the bottom, i need to weave back in anyway, and then the whole hiding the plug issue. i put about 1000 lights on my 6.5 ft tree... too many?? lol.
