substitute vanilla extract for vanilla bean?

I am attempting to make a yummy bread pudding recipe that a friend of dh's serves in his restaurant. It calls for vanilla bean to be simmered in heavy cream as part of the sauce but I can't find any so far ! Would vanilla extract be ok or would it just not taste the same?

I would use vanilla extract if you can't find vanilla bean, just make sure you use Pure Vanilla extract and not imitation.
I have a hard time finding vanilla beans too when I need them and I've subbed extract in a pinch

Good luck!

Cool, I have the real vanilla extract. How much would you use?
