How to train naps in crib rather than swing?
Hi! My daughter is almost 10 months old and since we are going on a trip at the end of January, I am trying to train her to sleep in her crib for her naps. She use to sleep about 3 hours a day (2 naps) in her swing. We've always had trouble with her sleeping and finally got her to sleep through the night via CIO. When I put her in her crib for her nap after rocking her to sleep she wakes up at 30 minutes every time screaming. That seems to be the time when she stirs and starts to wake up, but at night she is able to put herself back to sleep. Then she is pretty cranky since she got 1/4 of the nap she should have. I'll try again for her afternoon nap (she should be really tired by now), but the exact same thing happens. Her room is as dark as possible and I put her in her sleeping bag like at bedtime. I have no idea what to do now. She's been doing this consistently for a week now and I need some advice about what to do??? It's driving me crazy and I can't get anything done anymore! Any help?

let her good good and drowsy, but not fully asleep, and then put her in her crib. it wont be an overnight change, but she will eventually get the hint. in the meantime. when she wakes up mad, take 2 minutes and gather yourself together before you go in to get her. does wonders for the patience level.
i started with a baby who fell asleep in my arms only to one i can tickle and have laughing and put her down and she goes to sleep. course i may just be lucky.. lol. good luck.

Re: How to train naps in crib rather than swing?
We had the same issue with DD, and around 6 months started transitioning her to her bed by putting her "down" in her swing and when she was good and asleep, stopped the swing. That way she slept motionless for the majority of the nap/night. After that it was easier to put her down in her crib from the start. HTH!

Re: How to train naps in crib rather than swing?
DD napped in her swing for a good long time....
We tried stopping the swing, but she would usually wake up. Then I started rocking her to sleep. That worked fairly well, but it was sort of trading one bad habit for another (although that was easier to replicate in other locations). Then I only rocked her until she was really, really drowsy (like seconds from being asleep) and then put her in the crib. Now I rock her until she is at least not bouncing off the walls, and then put her down in the crib and she goes to sleep. This works for me. It usually takes 10 to 15 minutes of rocking, reading stories for the first 5-10 min, and I enjoy that time.

Can you leave the swing on in the room where she sleeps? Sometimes it's not the motion so much as the noise of the swing.
ETA: I mean put her in the crib for nap but leave the swing on in her room with a bag of flour or something to mimic her weight and the noise it would make if she were in it. |
